Communism has cast a long shadow over Romania. The passage of little over a quarter of a century since the overthrow in December 1989 of Romania’s last Communist leader, Nicolae Ceaușescu, offers a symbolic standpoint from which to penetrate that shadow and to throw light upon the entire period of Communist rule in the country. An appropriate point of departure is the observation that Romania’s trajectory as a Communist state within the Soviet bloc was unlike that of any other. That trajectory has its origins in the social structures, attitudes and policies in the pre-Communist period. The course of that trajectory is the subject of this inquiry.

Petre Tutea (1902-91) was one of the outstanding Christian dissident intellectuals of the Communist era in Eastern Europe. Revered as a saint by some, he spent thirteen years as a prisoner of conscience and twenty-eight years under house arrest at the hands of the Securitate. This book explores his unique response to the horrors of torture and 're-education' and reveals the experience of a whole generation detained in the political prisons. Tutea’s understanding of human needs and how they can be fulfilled even amidst extreme adversity not only reflects huge learning and great brilliance of mind, but also offers a spiritual vision grounded in personal experience of the Romanian Gulag. O mare parte a cărții este o autobiografie, deoarece Starețul Paisie constituie principalul izvor al datelor noastre. Cele mai multe povestiri provin din nemincinoasele sale buze. Dar cu toate acestea cele pe care le-am scris sunt puține și sărace și nu descoperă toată bogăția lui duhovnicească. Cartea se împarte în două părți: În prima parte, care cuprinde „Viața Starețului Paisie”, s-a încercat să se arate într-un cadru temporal și local, cât mai simplu cu putință, dar în întregime, calea lui de nevoință de la naștere și până la adormire. Partea a doua, „Date biografice împărțite pe teme”, am considerat necesar să o scriem ca pe o completare și lămurire a primei părți. Cu ajutorul ei te apropii mai mult de Stareț și îl înțelegi mai bine. Fiecare dintre cele două părți își păstrează o independență, – ar fi putut fi publicate și separat –, dar în același timp au o profundă legătură interioară. Și cea de-a doua parte este o biografie, deși nu urmează o ordine cronologică așa cum face prima, ci conține întâmplări din viața Starețului așezate în unități tematice.
