This book starts off from a philosophical premise: nobody can be in the world unless they are born into the world. It examines this premise in the light of the theological belief that birth serves, or ought to serve, as a model for understanding what resurrection could signify for us today. After all, the modern Christian needs to find some way of understanding resurrection, and the dogma of the resurrection of the body is vacuous unless we can relate it philosophically to our own world of experience. Nicodemus first posed the question "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" This book reads that problem in the context of contemporary philosophy (particularly the thought of Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and Deleuze). A phenomenology of the body born "from below" is seen as a paradigm for a theology of spiritual rebirth, and for rebirth of the body from "on high." The Resurrection changes everything in Christianity—but it is also our own bodies that must be transformed in resurrection, as Christ is transfigured. And the way in which I hope to be resurrected bodily in God, in the future, depends upon the way in which I live bodily today.

Car la " Résurrection change tout " en christianisme - monde et temps bien sûr (finitude), mais aussi notre propre corps transformé dans la figure du Christ transfiguré. Puissions-nous alors en recevoir la forme pour en être " in-formé ", puisque de la manière dont aujourd'hui je vis mon corps (naissance, sexualité, mort) dépend la façon dont demain je ressusciterai charnellement en Dieu. De " l'analytique christique de l'angoisse, de la souffrance et de la mort " (Le Passeur de Gethsémani), ce livre passe, comme en un second volet pouvant être lu indépendamment du premier, à " l'analytique de la résurrection comme mode d'être de la (re)naissance " (Métamorphose de la finitude). Ce dont le Fils pâtit, il en opère ici le passage vers son Père qui, dans la force de l'Esprit, en accomplit pour nous la métamorphose.

Belief and credal commitment sometimes seem to make less and less sense in the West. A kind of 'cultural amnesia' has taken hold, where formal religious adherence begins to seem almost unthinkable. This is especially so for the idea of divine revelation. Robyn Horner argues this means we need to re-evaluate how theology proceeds, focusing not so much on beliefs but on experience. Exploring ways in which the experiential might open human beings up to divine possibility, the author turns to phenomenology (especially in the French philosophical tradition) because it seeks to examine unrestrictedly what is given through involved encounter. Bringing phenomenology and poststructuralism together, Horner develops the idea of revelation as an 'event' wherein God interrupts and exceeds human experience, affecting and transforming it. This striking concept, named but largely unexplored by theology, articulates a notion of supernatural revelation which now starts to appear both coherent and plausible.
