Por regla general, los historiadores se han interesado en las consecuencias que tuvo la incorporación de América Latina en la economía mundial a lo largo del siglo XIX. Los imaginarios externos sobre un país siempre han incomodado a los que desde adentro contemplan su nación. Las descripciones de México hechas por extranjeros son valiosas fuentes de información, pero, al mismo tiempo, pueden abundar en prejuicios, estereotipos, malentendidos y simplificaciones, deficiencias que dicen más sobre sus autores que sobre el objeto de observación. Sin embargo, son imaginarios de una gran relevancia histórica y cultural. Este libro estudia la presencia de México en publicaciones de autores germanoparlantes entre 1914 y 1945, es decir, durante el Imperio alemán, creado en 1871, convertido en la República de Weimar en 1918 y en el Tercer Reich nacionalsocialista en 1933; también incluye obras publicadas en territorios germanohablantes del Imperio austrohúngaro y, después de su disolución en 1918, en los estados sucesores de este último.
