The manner in which people have been talking and writing about ‘development’ and the rules according to which they have done so have evolved over time. Development Discourse and Global History uses the archaeological and genealogical methods of Michel Foucault to trace the origins of development discourse back to late colonialism and notes the significant discontinuities that led to the establishment of a new discourse and its accompanying industry. This book goes on to describe the contestations, appropriations and transformations of the concept. It shows how some of the trends in development discourse since the crisis of the 1980s – the emphasis on participation and ownership, sustainable development and free markets – are incompatible with the original rules and thus lead to serious contradictions. The Eurocentric, authoritarian and depoliticizing elements in development discourse are uncovered, whilst still recognizing its progressive appropriations. The author concludes by analysing the old and new features of development discourse which can be found in the debate on Sustainable Development Goals and discussing the contribution of discourse analysis to development studies. This book is aimed at researchers and students in development studies, global history and discourse analysis as well as an interdisciplinary audience from international relations, political science, sociology, geography, anthropology, language and literary studies. Profiles Of Saints written by Cornelio Fabro and has been published by IVE Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-07 with Religion categories.

Profiles of Saints presents a unique series of essays by the philosopher and Stigmatine priest, Cornelio Fabro, that follow from his observation that the common element in the lives of all saints is "the luminous thread of divine grace that is powerful in weakness." Drawing from the lives of ten very different saints, these “sketches” highlight that aspect of holiness proper to each saint by furnishing the reader with an insight often lacking in summaries of the lives of the saints: a genuine understanding of the essential humanity of the saints and of the real transformative power of God's mercy and grace. In this sensitive and refreshing treatment of the saints as real people whose lives were never free from human weakness, failure, and struggle, Fabro reveals his own profound spirituality, deeply rooted in the mystery of redemptive suffering. May this volume serve to inspire all authentic Christians to strive for a life of sanctity and foster devotion to the saints, whose very glory was their willingness to allow their lives to be illumined by grace.

"The Life in Christ by Nicholas Cabasilas is a remarkable product of Byzantium's last great flowering of theology. At a time when secular humanism was increasingly asserting man's complete autonomy, Cabasilas proclaimed that man's true life lies not in himself, but in Christ. For him, man's redemption in Jesus Christ is not just a matter of history, which can be elucidated simply by scholarly endeavor. It is a saving event in which man is called to participate here and now, in body and spirit as well as intellect, through the sacramental life of the Church." "The present translation makes this devotional classic available for the first time in English, while the extensive introduction by Boris Bobrinskoy assesses its place within the history of eastern spirituality."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Gross Domestic Problem written by Doctor Lorenzo Fioramonti and has been published by Zed Books Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-17 with Business & Economics categories.

Gross domestic product is arguably the best-known statistic in the contemporary world, and certainly amongst the most powerful. It drives government policy and sets priorities in a variety of vital social fields - from schooling to healthcare. Yet for perhaps the first time since it was invented in the 1930s, this popular icon of economic growth has come to be regarded by a wide range of people as a 'problem'. After all, does our quality of life really improve when our economy grows 2 or 3 per cent? Can we continue to sacrifice the environment to safeguard a vision of the world based on the illusion of infinite economic growth? Lorenzo Fioramonti takes apart the 'content' of GDP - what it measures, what it doesn't and why - and reveals the powerful political interests that have allowed it to dominate today's economies. In doing so, he demonstrates just how little relevance GDP has to moral principles such as equity, social justice and redistribution, and shows that an alternative is possible, as evinced by the 'de-growth' movement and initiatives such as transition towns. A startling insight into the politics of a number that has come to dominate our everyday lives.
