The thirty-year period that marked the advent of the supersonic jet in military aviation was a particularly dangerous one for fighter pilots. As they learned to navigate speeds up to Mach 2, discovering the performance limits and weaknesses of the aircraft, their courage and stamina were tested to the limit. This engaging memoir relates the life story of a famed pilot who flew supersonic jets for the United States Air Force during the Cold War through Vietnam and beyond. As a test pilot, a member of the USAF Thunderbirds, a fighter pilot with more than 200 combat missions in the Vietnam War, and a Fighter Weapons School ("Top Gun") graduate and instructor, he was at the center of the most significant periods in military aviation.

Lockheed ́s F-104G, a brand-new sleek jet design of the early 1950s, was a dream bird with a flying performance well beyond imagination. Despite its widow maker reputation in Germany during the early years of operation, the F-104 gained cult status and pilots became addicted to flying it. In his book, Rolf Stünkel takes us back to his training days and cold-war flights over the Baltic sea and along the East German border - a gripping, thought-provoking journey through time, not without a self-critical look at the past and present.

Do you remember the time we used to do New York in three hours? Even twenty years after its final flight, Concorde remains the pinnacle of aviation design. The aircraft is still unmatched, which has led to a vast swathe of material being written about the aeroplane itself. However, relatively little has been said about the people who designed it. Concorde, A Designer's Life is an autobiography peppered with anecdotes from the team, humorous life stories and several 'technibits', all covering the design period of Concorde. Ted Talbot, who began his career at BAC as an aerodynamicist and later became chief design engineer, has combined the technical narrative with personal and family reminiscences to remind the reader that engineers have lives too. The path to Mach 2 was bumpy, with threats of cancellation and opposition from the Americans and the Russians, but this generally indicated to the Concorde team that they were on the right path! This informative, witty and thoroughly enjoyable peek into an unusual life is a valuable addition to any bookshelf.

Building Concorde written by Tony Buttler and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Concorde (Jet transports) categories.

Concorde remains one of the most iconic and most beautiful aircraft ever to take to the skies and as a result many aspects of its development and its operational career have been covered frequently both in books and magazine articles. However, this book provides genuinely new perspectives on the Concorde program as it explores how this great aircraft came into being, concentrating both on the design and development aspects of the airliner and on the political background to this exercise in Anglo-French collaboration. Early chapters look at the various supersonic transport proposals mooted both in Britain and France before Concorde. The following sections examine areas relating to the practical difficulties of supersonic flight such as supersonic booms. The narrative then moves on to how the British and French work was merged into a single program. Later portions of the book describe the flight test program leading up to service entry in 1976 and the text is complimented by an extensive range of photographs and drawings, a great many of which are previously unpublished.

In support of the NASA High-Speed Research Program, a Mach 2.4 high-speed civil transport concept was developed to serve as a baseline for studies to assess advanced technologies required for a feasible year 2005 entry-into-service vehicle. The configuration was designed to carry 251 passengers at Mach 2.4 cruise with a 6500-n.mi. range and operate in the existing world airport structure. The details of the configuration development, aerodynamic design, propulsion system and integration, mass properties, sizing, and mission performance are presented. The baseline configuration has a wing area of 9l00 sq ft and a takeoff gross weight of 614300 lb. The four advanced turbine bypass engines have 39 000 lb thrust with a weight of 9950 lb each, yielding a vehicle takeoff thrust-to-weight ratio of 0.254 and a takeoff wing loading of 67.5 lb/sq ft. The configuration was sized by the 11000-ft takeoff field length requirement and the usable fuel volume limit, which results in a rotation speed of 179 knots and an end-of-mission landing approach velocity of 134 knots.Fenbert, James W. and Ozoroski, Lori P. and Geiselhart, Karl A. and Shields, Elwood W. and McElroy, Marcus O.Langley Research CenterSUPERSONIC SPEED; HIGH SPEED; SUPERSONIC CRUISE AIRCRAFT RESEARCH; SUPERSONIC TRANSPORTS; SUPERSONIC AIRCRAFT; TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT; AIRCRAFT DESIGN; AERODYNAMIC CONFIGURATIONS; AIRCRAFT CONFIGURATIONS; PROPULSION SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS; WING LOADING; THRUST-WEIGHT RATIO; TURBINE ENGINES

The Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak and D-558-2 Skyrocket were, with the Bell XS-1, the earliest transonic research aircraft built in this country to gather data so the aviation community could understand what was happening when aircraft approached the speed of sound (roughly 741 miles per hour at sea level in dry air at 32 degrees Fahrenheit). In the early 1940s, fighter (actually, in the terms of the time, pursuit) aircraft like the P-38 Lightning were approaching these speeds in dives and either could not get out of the dives before hitting the ground or were breaking apart from the effects of compressibility-increased density and disturbed airflow as the speed approached that of sound and created shock waves.

This paper is based on a performance and economics study of a Mach two oblique flying wing transport aircraft that is to replace the B747B. In order to fairly compare our configuration with the B747B an equal structural technology level is assumed. It will be shown that the oblique flying wing configuration will equal or outperform the B747 in speed, economy and comfort while a modern stability and control system will balance the aircraft and smooth out gusts. The aircraft is designed to comply with the FAR25 airworthiness requirements and FAR36 stage 3 noise regulations. Geometry, aerodynamics, stability and control parameters of the oblique flying wing transport are discussed. Vandervelden, Alexander J. M. Unspecified Center NAG2-471; RTOP 505-60...
