This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ...slope of about eight degrees and a side slope ranging from 14 to 20 degrees, while a tool for cutting very hard steel should have a back slope of about five degrees and a side slope of nine degrees. The reason for decreasing the slope and thus increasing the lip angle for harder metals is to give the necessary increased strength to the cutting edge to prevent it from crumbling under the pressure of the cut. The tool illustrated at A, Fig. 4, is much stronger than it would be if ground as shown at B, as the former is more blunt. If a tool ground as at A, however, were used for cutting very soft steel, there would be a greater chip pressure on the top and, consequently, a greater resistance to cutting, than if a keener tool had been employed; furthermore, the cutting speed would have to be lower, which is of even greater importance than point in connection with tool grinding. If a tool is pressed hard against a grinding wheel, even if the latter has a copious supply of water, the temper will sometimes be drawn. When grinding a flat surface, to avoid burning, the tool should be frequently withdrawn from the wheel so that the cooling water (a copious supply of which should be provided) can reach the surface being ground. A moderate pressure should also be applied. What has been said about burning applies more particularly to carbon steel, but even self-hardening steels are not improved by being over-heated at the grinding wheel. Points on Grinding Planer Tools.--While the action of a planer is entirely different from that of a lathe, many of the principles which govern the shape of tuming tools also apply in the grinding of tools for planing. Front and side views of a planer roughing tool are shown at A, Fig. 5. As the cutting is done by the...

Excerpt from Rubber Machinery: An Encyclopedia of Machines Used in Rubber Manufacture Rubber manufacture, be it noted, divides itself into some thirteen well defined classes. In these lines there are certain basic processes that all use - washing and mixing, for example. It is true, also, that most of them make cements, for their own use at least; that a great number use tubing machines; that spreaders are used by others than proofers, and so on. The object of this volume is to record the machines that are of general application either to all or to a number of the lines into which the trade is divided. To this end voluminous matter has been collected from machinery makers the world over; from rubber factories, from patent specifications - 'american, English, German and French. The actual value of such a collection to the rubber manufacturer, whatever his line, should be great, but the suggestive value will be even greater. Excerpt from Machinery's Encyclopedia, Vol. 7: A Work of Reference Covering Practical Mathematics and Mechanics, Machine Design, Machine Construction and Operation, Electrical, Gas, Hydraulic, and Steam Power Machinery, Metallurgy, and Kindred Subjects; Index and Guide to Systematic Reading The encyclopedia has been very completely cross-indexed that is, the same subject may be found by referring in the index to any of the main words that would be likely to be thought of in connection with it. The user of the encyclopedia should be cautioned, however, not to assume that a subject is omitted, simply because he does not find it under the first word that may enter his mind; should a subject not be found directly upon the first reference to the index, the user is advised to look up some other heading in the index, particularly one containing the most important word in connection with the topic in which he is interested. The method Of indexing requires but little explanation, as it is very clear and simple. The index of the encyclopedia is like the index of any other book, in that it refers to the volume and the page where the information sought will be found. In order, however, to still further facilitate reference to subject matter that may be inconspicuously given in the text, the index does not refer only to the page, but also to that part of the page where the reference will be found. This is done as follows: The reference, III, 26 5-2, indicates that the information sought is found on page 265 of Volume III; the last figure 2, printed in italics, shows that the reference is found in the lower left-hand column of that page. The figures I, 2, 3, and 4, printed in italic type after the page number, each refer to one-fourth of the page; I indicates the upper half of the left-hand column; 2, the lower half of the left-hand column; 3, the upper half of the right hand column; and 4, the lower half of the right-hand column. The advantage of this simple method of arrangement of the index is apparent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
