English summary: Contradictory to a theologically undifferentiated comparison between power, which is seen as negative, and powerlessness, which is interpreted as positive, Reinhard Feldmeier shows that power is always the issue in the New Testament, from Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom of God to the Pauline designation of the gospel as the power of God and the reference to the Almighty God in the Revelation of John. In doing so, he distinguishes between the concepts of power: The power which the devil offers Jesus at the beginning has a different quality than the power which God grants to the Risen One in heaven and on earth. In view of the understanding of God's power, the author explains how this is a force which empowers others. In addition, he draws ethical conclusions in view of the way human beings deal with power in the community of believers as well as in the state. Vor dem Hintergrund der Interaktion von Religion und Macht in der Antike fuhrt Reinhard Feldmeier diese Unterschiede zunachst im Blick auf die Macht Gottes aus. Dann zieht er aus dem Verstandnis der Macht Gottes als einer das Gegenuber ermachtigenden Kraft die ethischen Konsequenzen fur den menschlichen Umgang mit Macht, sowohl in der Gemeinschaft der Glaubenden wie im Staat. Schliesslich vertieft er diesen Gedanken dann noch einmal gezielt im Blick auf die Demut als eine Christus entsprechende Haltung und bricht damit eine Lanze fur diese heute eher verdachtige Tugend.

Articulate first century Mediterranean society, Jewish and Christian included, expressly favoured harmonious order in society, in individuals, in communication, and in thought. Its common basis was the patriarchal family, the rule of law, rational self-control, and rational thought. Yet there was also resistance to oppressive and unjust order in all spheres; and while law could be held educative, yet there were substantial first century critiques of law, not just Paul’s, and awareness that judicial procedures could be chaotic and biassed. Strands of such dissidence appear in Jesus and in Paul, with significant relevance for any understanding of the early Christian movement(s) and contemporary Judaism(s) in Graeco-Roman context, but also with important implications for any practical reflections and application.

Were slavery and social injustice leading to dire poverty in antiquity and late antiquity only regarded as normal, 'natural' (Aristotle), or at best something morally 'indifferent' (the Stoics), or, in the Christian milieu, a sad but inevitable consequence of the Fall, or even an expression of God's unquestionable will? Social Justice and the Legitimacy of Slavery shows that there were also definitive condemnations of slavery and social injustice as iniquitous and even impious, and that these came especially from ascetics, both in Judaism and in Christianity, and occasionally also in Greco-Roman ('pagan') philosophy. Ilaria L. E. Ramelli argues that this depends on a link not only between asceticism and renunciation, but also between asceticism and justice, at least in ancient and late antique philosophical asceticism. Ramelli provides a careful investigation through all of Ancient Philosophy (not only Aristotle and the Stoics, but also the Sophists, Socrates, Plato, the Neoplatonists, and much more), Ancient to Rabbinic Judaism, Hellenistic Jewish ascetic groups such as the Essenes and the Therapeutae, all of the New Testament, with special focus on Paul and Jesus, and Greek, Latin, and Syriac Patristic, from Clement and Origen to the Cappadocians, from John Chrysostom to Theodoret to Byzantine monastics, from Ambrose to Augustine, from Bardaisan to Aphrahat, without neglecting the Christianized Sentences of Sextus. In particular, Ramelli considers Gregory of Nyssa and the interrelation between theory and practice in all of these ancient and patristic philosophers, as well as to the parallels that emerge in their arguments against slavery and against social injustice.
