Social postmodernism and systematic theology can be considered the new pair in some of the most creative discussions on the future of theological method on a global scale. Both in the academy and in the public square, as well as in the manifold local and pastoral moments of ministry and community social activism, the social, the postmodern, and the theological intermingle in engaging and border-crossing ways. The Community of the Weak presents a new kind of jazzy fundamental theology with a postmodern touch, using jazz as a metaphor, writing ethnographically messy texts out of the personal windows of lived experiences, combining fragments of autobiography with theological reconstruction. A comparative perspective on North American and European developments in contemporary systematic theology serves as a hermeneutical horizon to juxtapose two continents in their very different contexts. The author proposes a systematic and fundamental theology that is more jazzy, global, and narrative, deeply embedded in pastoral ministry to tell its postmodern story.

In the final years of the German colonial empire, an ambitious project was undertaken to collect material on "native law", rules of inheritance and property, criminal law, political structure and administration. On the basis of a standardized questionnaire, German missionaries, anthropologists and colonial officials were asked to answer more than 100 detailed questions. The original answers have not been published, but can be found in some archives and libraries in the form of undated brochures under the collective title: Beantwortung des Fragebogens... The answers have been revised for the two-volume collected edition covering all the former German colonies. From Namibia there exist 27 reports in all. The chapters on the customs, laws and political organization of the "peoples" of Namibia (vol. 2. p. 209-435) are restricted to the Herero, the Nama, the Damara and the San ("Bushmen"), and have been edited by Heinrich Vedder and two German lawyers: B. von Zastrow and M. Schmidt. For reasons not explained, the original material concerned with the Ovambo (collected by the missionaries M. Rautanen and A. Wulfhorst) is not included. Despite its obvious limitations, the book contains a wealth of observations not available anywhere else in this condensed form. (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 marked the end of East Germany's socialist regime and a new beginning for a unified German Federal Republic. Cultural historians agree that the event caused one of the deepest rifts in time and thinking seen by an entire generation of Germans--a rift that left its mark on the psyche of every citizen, challenging notions of the personal and the political, and crashing traditional understandings of the individual and the collective self. In this bold rethinking of the question, Cheryl Dueck goes beyond the social, political, and psychological discourses that Marx and Freud, Foucault and Lacan viewed as the initiators of modern (socialist) identities to explore the literature and discourse of the quest for unity of the female subject. Reading such authors as Christa Wolf, Brigitte Reimann, Helga Königsdorf, and Helga Schubert, Dueck traces the striking fissures which run through time and through the female self, haunting women within the socialist project. The book shows how two generations of women writers have struggled consciously and systematically in their letters, aesthetic writings, and literary production to create a new language to express their own sense of self within a restrictive socialist and patriarchal system. Rifts in Time and in the Self offers an unprecedented look at the reconceptualizations of the female subject during several phases of GDR history, and women writers' persistent attempt to carve out spaces of identity and community.
