Este livro é uma tentativa de suscitar uma nova maneira de pensar a macroeconomia a teoria do desenvolvimento econômico a partir de uma perspectiva novo-desenvolvimentista. É uma macroeconomia do desenvolvimento histórico-estrutural que busca integrar a macroeconomia pós-keynesiana e o desenvolvimentismo clássico e, ao mesmo tempo, é uma crítica destas duas escolas de pensamento, da primeira, porque ela não está pensada tomando em consideração os países em desenvolvimento, da segunda porque foi pensada para um estágio de desenvolvimento anterior ao qual se encontram as economias em desenvolvimento e, particularmente aos países de renda média, e das duas porque elas não deram suficiente ênfase à taxa de câmbio e aos déficits ou superávits em conta corrente, duas variáveis que desempenham um papel estratégico na era da globalização em que vivemos. O nome mais geral desse novo quadro teórico que vem sendo desenvolvido no Brasil desde o início dos anos 2000 é Novo Desenvolvimentismo, que contém, além da macroeconomia desenvolvimentista que este livro procura sistematizar, uma microeconomia na qual os mercados imperfeitos e a política industrial são centrais, e uma economia política voltada para a análise histórica do Estado e das coalizões de classe desenvolvimentistas. - Aborda a macroeconomia para o desenvolvimento, formalizando seus fundamentos teóricos e as estratégias que os países em desenvolvimento devem seguir para atingir desenvolvimento econômico com estabilidade.

At the end of 2019, the world came across a virus, SARS-CoV-2, which causes a disease classified as COVID-19. The virus is highly transmissible and causes an acute respiratory syndrome that ranges from mild symptoms in about 80% cases to very severe symptoms with respiratory failure in 5% to 10% of cases. The epicenter of the outbreak of this pandemic was Wuhan, a city in China’s Hubei Province. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak of COVID-19 to be a pandemic and classified it as a high global risk. Human health risk assessment for COVID-19 depends on the characteristics of the virus and includes the process of gathering and analyzing environmental and health information using specific techniques to support decision making, systematically taking actions, and articulating the collected information within and between sectors for promoting health and improving the social and living conditions of populations. To assess COVID-19 risk factors, it is important to consider and document all relevant information available at the time of assessment. In this way, decision making will get a direction and the assessment process will get recorded, which includes evaluation of the risk factors, control measures, methods used for evaluation, why they were considered important, and their order of priority. This book addresses in detail the challenges posed by the virus and presents up-to-date knowledge on safety risk assessment and economics, as well as ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of COVID-19.

In the recent economic history of Latin America no country has yet found the means to combine effectively economic growth with equity. Unavoidable Industrial Restructuring in Latin America compares the development path of Latin America with that of the East Asian newly industrialized countries (NICs), the United States, and Europe in the 1970s and 1980s to show the national policies and international cooperation necessary to set Latin American countries on the road to healthy economies. Fernando Fajnzylber argues that technological and industrial progress is the driving force of a positive relationship among dynamism, competitiveness, austerity, and equity. Latin America's failure to master this technological progress underlies its economic difficulties. To overcome the inheritance of past mistakes, the author maintains, Latin America must undergo not only macroeconomic stabilization and a reduction of the debt burden, but also a complete transformation of the production structure. The role of the state and the institutional setup need to be modified and new social and sectoral policies devised. Fajnzylber sees this radical restructuring as an unavoidable step if Latin America is ever to achieve a workable balance between growth and equity.
