It is a widely held opinion that the attainment of a robust economic growth and development in Nigeria will require, among other things, an increase in investment which will have to come primarily from the private sector. Viewed against the background of growing evidence of a link between investment and economic growth, the question of what determines private investment behavior in Nigeria therefore becomes an important one. Several studies in developing countries emphasize the importance of macroeconomic policy in explaining variations in investment, and in particular, identify the macroeconomic determinants of private investment to include; interest rates, output growth, public investment, bank credit to the private sector, inflation, real exchange rate, and the level of trade. This study proceeds in the same vein and evaluates the macroeconomic determinants of private investment in Nigeria by means of an estimation technique based on the co-integration and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM).

Recent macroeconomic developments in Nigeria's financial sector reveal a strong desire by the monetary authorities to reposition Nigeria's financial system to meet the trend of globalization. This study therefore, investigated the determinants of private domestic savings in Nigeria and also examined the impact of savings and bank credits on Nigeria's economic growth.Two models were adopted viz Distributed Lag-Error Correction Model (DL-ECM) and Distributed Model. The empirical results showed a positive influence of values of GDP per capita (PCY), Financial Deepening (FSD), Interest Rate Spread (IRS) and negative influence of Real Interest Rate (RIR) and Inflation Rate (INFR) on the size of private domestic savings. Also positive relationship exists between the lagged values of total private savings, private sector credit, public sector credit, interest rate spread, exchange rates and economic growth. We therefore recommend, among others, that government's effort should be geared towards improving per capita income by reducing the unemployment rate in the country. Also growth should be enhanced through improved savings, credit allocation and investments in highly productive sectors.

This paper assesses empirically the role of public policies in stimulating private savings and investment in sub-Saharan African countries, based on data for the period 1986-92. The main findings of the analysis are as follows: (i) policies effective in stimulating private savings and investment include those that keep the rate of inflation low, reduce macroeconomic uncertainty, promote financial deepening, and lower the external debt burden; (ii) measures that promote structural reforms and reduce the budget deficit (without lowering government investment) help to raise private investment; and (iii) declines in government savings are only partially offset by increases in private savings.

This paper gauges the key determinants of China's private consumption in relation to GDP using data on the Chinese economy and evidence from other countries' experiences. The results suggest there is nothing "special" about consumption in China. Rather, the challenge is to explain why the conditioning variables-notably a low level of service sector employment, the level of financial sector development, and low real interest rates-are so different in China relative to other countries' historical experience. The results suggest, in particular, that efforts to further raise household income and the share of employment in the services sector, as well as to develop capital markets, including liberalizing interest rates and creating alternative savings instruments are likely to have the biggest impact on consumption. Other mechanisms to raise household income and mitigate household-specific risk (such as by improving the healthcare and pension systems) also have a role to play.
