Both as a concept and a set of social relationships, community is central to contemporary debates about globalization. Faced with finding a livable response to globalization, many communities are renegotiating their identities and functions and, in some instances, entirely new communities are being formed. Yet there is no clear consensus on why community matters or on how globalization affects particular communities. Renegotiating Community asks what happens to the autonomy of individuals and communities under the influence of globalization. Original case studies show how a range of communities are renegotiating the meanings of community and autonomy while living with, and sometimes challenging, the processes of globalization. By addressing the coercive and comforting dimensions of community – as well as the need to reconcile conflicting claims to autonomy – this book redraws the conceptual maps through which community, globalization, and autonomy are understood.

Galician culture has experienced an unprecedented period of growth since the re-establishment of democracy and the development of its political autonomy. Audio/visual production (music and cinema in particular) has provided some of the privileged channels through which modern Galician cultural identities have been imagined, constructed, and consumed at home and abroad. Some of these include innovative animation features in the leading edge of international production, avant-garde non-fiction films winning accolades around the world, videos widely distributed through the Internet, Movida groups emerging from the periphery, and folk artists merging into the pan-Celtic music movement globally. This creative explosion has occurred in a productive dialogue with the global currents at large and with considerable projection beyond the geopolitical boundaries of the nation and the state, but these seismic changes are only beginning to be the subject of attention of cultural and media studies. This book aims to explore some of the dramatic changes which have taken place in the Galician cultural landscape and argues for a perspectival shift towards a postnational and interdisciplinary cultural studies approach based on a deterritorialization of the Galician cultural map. Multilingualism And Politics written by Katerina Strani and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-07 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This edited book makes a significant contribution to the relatively under-explored field of multilingualism and politics, approaching the topic from two key perspectives: multilingualism in politics, and the politics of multilingualism. Through the lens of case studies from around the world, the authors in this volume combine theoretical and empirical insights to examine the inter-relation between multilingualism and politics in different spheres and contexts, including minority language policy, national identity, the translation of political debates and discourse, and the use of multiple, often competing languages in educational settings. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of politics, sociology, sociolinguistics, language policy, and translation and interpreting studies.

New Tourism In The 21st Century written by Rubén C. Lois-González and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-19 with Social Science categories.

This book analyses the cultural elements of 21st-century tourism. The structure of the book is based on four main issues, which will help further the reader’s understanding of present-day experiential tourism: namely urban and cultural tourism on a global scale; specific studies of new products linked to reappraising the landscape; heritage; and nature. It also examines the influence of branding and of the images projected in order to promote this new type of tourism, using both theoretical and general approaches. Finally, the Camino de Santiago is analysed as a paradigm of the new pilgrimage routes all over the world, with their implications and polysemic nature. Culture, nature, spirituality and urbanism are brought together in a series of studies of contemporary tourist activities. Tourism is, in short, an activity that marks the return of slow movement, of calm and relaxation, of the landscape and of self-rediscovery as a reappraised counterpoint to the frenetic pace of life in modern-day societies.

Two Sides Of One River written by António Medeiros and has been published by Berghahn Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with History categories.

Galicia, the region in the northwest corner of Spain contiguous with Portugal, is officially known as the Autonomous Community of Galicia. It is recognized as one of the historical nationalities making up the Spanish state, as legitimized by the Spanish Constitution of 1978. Although Galicia and Portugal belong to different states, there are frequent allusions to their similarities. This study compares topographic and ethnographic descriptions of Galicia and Portugal from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to understand how the integration into different states and the existence of nationalist discourses resulted in marked differences in the historical representations of these two bordering regions of the Iberian Peninsula. The author explores the role of the imagination in creating a sense, over the last century and a half, of the national being and becoming of these two related peoples.
