Pietro d’Abano (1250-1315) è un genio avvolto nel mistero. Uno di quei pionieri della scienza, quando ancora si chiamava magia, che propiziarono l’uscita dal Medioevo e l’avvento del Rinascimento. Fu filosofo, astronomo e astrologo, ma soprattutto medico, e per questo a lungo perseguitato dall’Inquisizione, che ben tre volte cercò di condannarlo al rogo come eretico e negromante. Le sue opere sono note agli studiosi, ma poco si sa della sua vita. Anzi, delle sue vite. Perché, in un’epoca in cui il solo viaggiare era un azzardo, dopo l’adolescenza tra Abano e Padova fuggì a Costantinopoli, dove imparò le lingue e le arti mediche, quindi visse dieci anni nella nuova capitale d’Europa, Parigi, da insegnante alla Sorbona, e infine tornò a Padova, dove diede inizio alla sua famosa scuola medica, prima di sparire letteralmente dalla faccia della terra. Ma la morte è solo l’ultimo degli enigmi di Pietro d’Abano che queste pagine intendono svelare.

Ricci's book ranges widely over Calvino's oeuvre to illustrate the accuracy of the idea articulated by Calvino himself that a visual image lies at the origin of all his narrative. The book's main theme is the difficult interface between word and image that Calvino struggled with throughout his career, the act of perception that rendered visible that which was invisible and transformed what was seen into what is read.
