Con ese hilo conductor, se narran multitud de historias paralelas, de hecho otro gran poema sagrado para el hinduismo como el Bhagavad-gita forman parte de él. Son historias de guerra y lucha entre el bien y el mal, de confrontación por la tierra, de amor, traición y venganza, de sabios, dioses y demonios. Historias algunas de una poesía bellísima y sorprendente, cómo sólo la creatividad india puede concebir. De cada historia, como de la tradición de cada pueblo, se desgranan enseñanzas para la vida que se han transmitido de generación en generación.

The Mahabharata is one of the greatest stories ever told.
