Ce livre rassemble des contributions inédites sur la révolution "Mai 68". On y retrouve des historiens, philosophes, sociologues ou politologues spécialistes de longue date de l?événement qui écrivent cette fois avec un demi-siècle de recul. Le monde dans lequel nous vivons, constatent-ils, a depuis radicalement change?. Certains thèmes, chers aux soixante-huitards, font aujourd?hui partie du lexique classique du cadre moderne, a? l?aise dans la mondialisation (la créativité, l?innovation, la réalisation de soi, l?anticonformisme etc.). Mais d?autres thèmes s?avèrent difficilement digérables par le capitalisme et re?e?mergent dans les expériences tre?s contemporaines qu?évoquent nos auteurs : Zones d?autonomie a? défendre, Gilets Jaunes, nouvelles luttes fe?ministes (phe?nome?ne me-too, etc.). Ainsi en est-il par exemple de la critique de l?exploitation des ressources (qu?elles soient "humaines" ou naturelles) et de la course à la croissance. Les crises récentes (comme celle de 2008) ont aussi stimule? la plume de certains contributeurs, la? ou? d?autres encore se sont penchés sur les inflexions progressistes que les mouvements sociaux inspirés de "l?esprit 68" ont permis dans le droit (des femmes, des minorite?s sexuelles ou raciales, etc.). En un mot comme en cent, cet ouvrage scrute les traces encore vives de Mai 68. Mais il le fait sans pour autant ignorer que bien des dimensions de la contestation soixante huitarde servent aujourd?hui la libéralisation sauvage de tous les marchés, l?affaiblissement de l?état "social" et la soumission de toutes choses au marketing (l?art, les loisirs, la culture...). Son principal intérêt, outre qu?il ne verse ni dans l?angélisme ni dans la critique réactionnaire de "Mai 68", est probablement de faire en permanence le lien entre l?événement et des phénomènes sociaux, politiques ou économiques récents tout a? fait majeurs.

Those who advocate ideas about "postmodernity" and "post-industrialism" offer radical critiques of existing social and political institutions. But they provide very little in place of those institutions. It is all very well to criticize the limitations of social democracy, the welfare state, trade unionism, and social classes as agents of change, but once these have been thrown into crisis what other institutions do we have to depend on? The Reinvention of Politics, suggests we should think again about forging a new model of politics for our times. An active, devolved civil society, Beck argues, can sustain the claim that modernity is inherently democratic. For many issues now - for example, those involving technology, environment protest, the family, or gender relations - belong to the domain of what the author calls "subpolitics". The postmodern critique of modernity, in Beck's view, is based on mistaken generalizations about a transitional phase in the evolution of modern society. What is needed, he argues, is the reinvention of politics, corresponding to th new demands of a society which remains modern, but which has progressed beyond the earlier form of industrial society. Despite their importance during the French Revolution, the Paris middle classes are little known. This book focuses on the family organization and the political role of the Paris commercial middle classes, using as a case study the Faubourg St. Marcel and particularly the parish of St. M dard. David Garrioch argues that in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries the commercial middle classes were steadfastly local in their family ties and outlook. He shows, too, that they took independent political action in defense of their local position. This gradually changed during the eighteenth century, and the Revolution greatly accelerated the process of integration, at the same time broadening the composition of what may now be termed the Parisian bourgeoisie. Central to Garrioch's argument is the idea that family, politics, and power are intimately connected. He shows the centrality of kinship to local politics in the first half of the eighteenth century, and the way new family structures were related to changes in the nature of politics even before the Revolution. Among the many important issues considered are birth control, the role of women, the importance of lineage, the spatial limits of middle-class lives, and the language and secularization of politics.

What is symbolic representation? Since Hanna Pitkin’s seminal The Concept of Representation, the symbolic has been the least studied dimension of political representation. Innovatively adopting a discursive approach, this book - the first full-length treatment of symbolic representation - focuses on gender issues to tackle important questions such as: What are women and men symbols of, and how is gender constructed in policy discourse? It studies what functions symbolic representation fulfils in the construction of gender, what social roles get legitimized in policy discourse, and how this affects power constellations, ultimately revealing much about the relation between symbolic, descriptive, and substantive representation. Emanuela Lombardo and Petra Meier draw on theories of symbolic representation and gender, as well as rich primary material about political debates on labour and care issues, partnership and reproductive rights, gender violence, and quotas. Using this original data, the authors show that reconsidering symbolic representation from a discursive perspective makes explicit issues of (in)equality embedded within particular constructions, as well as their consequences for political representation and gender equality. This important exploration raises relevant new questions regarding the representation of gender that form valuable contributions to the fields of political science, political theory, sociology, and gender studies.
