A seguir, Maigret fala sobre sua infância no interior, a morte da mãe, a influência do pai e dos tios, a ida para Paris, os primeiros anos na Polícia, e conta como conheceu a esposa, Louise. Em um dos melhores momentos do livro, Maigret analisa a repercussão do personagem de Simenon no cinema e se compara com todos os atores que o interpretaram na tela – uns mais magros, outros mais velhos, alguns tão verossímeis que acredita ter sido secretamente observado por eles. As reuniões na sede da Polícia também originaram diálogos antológicos entre criatura e criador. Em uma delas, quando Maigret reclama que Simenon está cometendo inexatidões técnicas em seus livros, o último afirma: “– A verdade nunca parece verdadeira. (...) Conte uma história qualquer a alguém. Se não a enfeitar, acharão inacreditável, artificial. Enfeite-a, e será mais verdadeira que o natural.”
