Hustruen til en velhavende amerikansk forretningsmand er blevet kvalt, men til Maigrets overraskelse konstaterer han, at den myrdede kvinde ankom til sit fatale møde med morderen bevæbnet med en pistol. Han opdager også, at den dræbtes mand har en affære med sin søns guvernante, og at faderskabet til sønnen er tvivlsomt. Maigrets undersøgelser bringer ham fra de endeløse korridorer på Hotel Majestic ud på landet i Bois de Boulogne og til det solbeskinnede Cannes. Der støder han på en verden af prostitution, narkotikamisbrug og pengeafpresning. Romanen blev filmatiseret på fransk i 1945 som "Majestic Hotel Cellars". Den er senere genindspillet til tv ved to lejligheder, senest i 1993. Fransk kriminalserie om den piberygende kriminalkommissær Jules Maigret, der har viet sit liv til at opklare forbrydelser. Serien består af 75 romaner og 28 noveller oprindeligt udgivet mellem 1930 og 1972. Georges Simenon (1903-1989), belgisk forfatter.
