Maio de 68: A Brecha é mais do que um relato, in loco, de um acontecimento de proporções titânicas, mas uma epopeia sobre uma abertura que persiste até os nossos dias: sua reivindicação anticapitalista, por meio de um clamor pleno e imanente, que não se conformava com um socialismo burocrático; era preciso não só derrotar o capitalismo como, também, recusar a substituição da burguesia por qualquer outra casta que, meramente, lhe sucedesse. Castoriadis e Lefort, ambos pensadores engajados, comprometidos com a Socialismo ou Barbárie, intelectuais reconhecidos e militantes incansáveis da construção de um socialismo outro, e Morin, um pensador judeu e velho membro da Resistência Francesa -- que ainda, hoje, quase aos cem anos continua a lutar pelas causas urgentes -- se uniram para a difícil missão de narrar esse atravessamento que passava por universidades, ruas, praças, fábricas etc. Ainda que o Maio de 68 francês, do qual trata o livro, tenha ecoado o que já acontecia na luta por libertação no Terceiro Mundo, da luta dos jovens comunistas chineses contra a velha burocracia ou dos vietnamitas e dos latino-americanos contra o imperialismo, dos negros por direitos civis nos Estados Unidos, fato é que Paris, naquele instante, era o megafone pelo qual atravessava o burburinho que agitava o mundo: como no Junho de 2013 brasileiro, no qual São Paulo reverberou as lutas de outras capitais, ao final, recebendo e amplificando o que chegava, devolvendo maior o clamor original e fazendo-o chegar a tantas outras partes. Como acentuou Castoriadis em seu relato ainda na primeira parte do livro: é a primeira vez que, numa sociedade capitalista burocrática moderna, não é mais a reivindicação, mas a afirmação revolucionária mais radical que irrompe aos olhos de todos e se propaga pelo mundo. O que era essa agitação, o que era essa polifonia, quem eram esses novos atores que não apenas entraram no jogo como, também, viraram o tabuleiro e questionaram o seu sentido? É isso que fazem os autores, escrevendo quase como se tomados pela peste, sob o efeito de uma febre infernal. Nascidos nos anos 1920, eles eram fruto de uma geração que, à direita e à esquerda acreditava, em grande medida, no mito do progresso e da modernização, coisa que bem antes do Maio, eles já recusavam; uma ilusão que projetava, como Morin bem pontuou, para um futuro no qual A União Soviética, ao se tornar liberal, e os Estados Unidos da América ao se regular, vão convergir para o mesmo tipo de sociedade assistencial e de democracia pluralista. Esse grande engano e foi, definitivamente, desmontado no Maio de 68, na "desordem nova" à qual se referiu Lefort, pela qual os franceses descobriram que sob os pavimentos das ruas havia a praia, ao arrancar os paralelepídedos para responder ao aparato repressivo em ação. Ainda que o capitalismo enfim se reconfigurou para reagir a este tipo de revolução na forma do neoliberalismo, fato é que a Brecha da qual falam os autores se mantém viva e, como acontecimento, emerge de tempos em tempos pondo o sistema ainda em xeque.

In virtually all corners of the Western world, 1968 witnessed a highly unusual sequence of popular rebellions. In Italy, France, Spain, Vietnam, the United States, West Germany, Czechoslovakia, Mexico, and elsewhere, millions of individuals took matters into their own hands to counter imperialism, capitalism, autocracy, bureaucracy, and all forms of hierarchical thinking. Recent reinterpretations have sought to play down any real challenge to the socio-political status quo in these events, but Gerd-Rainer Horn's book offers a spirited counterblast. 1968, he argues, opened up the possibility that economic and political elites on both sides of the Iron Curtain could be toppled from their position of unnatural superiority to make way for a new society where everyday people could, for the first time, become masters of their own destiny. Furthermore, Horn contends, the moment of crisis and opportunity culminating in 1968 must be seen as part of a larger period of experimentation and revolt. The ten years between 1956 and 1966, characterised above all by the flourishing of iconoclastic cultural rebellions, can be regarded as a preparatory period which set the stage for the non-conformist cum political revolts of the subsequent 'red' decade (1966-1976). Horn's geographic centres of attention are Western Europe, including the first full examination of Mediterranean revolts, and North America. He placed particular emphasis on cultural nonconformity, the student movement, working class rebellions, the changing contours of the Left, and the meaning of participatory democracy. His book will make fascinating reading for anyone interested in this turbulent period and the fundamental changes that were wrought upon societies either side of the Atlantic.

During May 1968, students and workers in France united in the biggest strike and the largest mass movement in French history. Protesting capitalism, American imperialism, and Gaullism, 9 million people from all walks of life, from shipbuilders to department store clerks, stopped working. The nation was paralyzed—no sector of the workplace was untouched. Yet, just thirty years later, the mainstream image of May '68 in France has become that of a mellow youth revolt, a cultural transformation stripped of its violence and profound sociopolitical implications. Kristin Ross shows how the current official memory of May '68 came to serve a political agenda antithetical to the movement's aspirations. She examines the roles played by sociologists, repentant ex-student leaders, and the mainstream media in giving what was a political event a predominantly cultural and ethical meaning. Recovering the political language of May '68 through the tracts, pamphlets, and documentary film footage of the era, Ross reveals how the original movement, concerned above all with the question of equality, gained a new and counterfeit history, one that erased police violence and the deaths of participants, removed workers from the picture, and eliminated all traces of anti-Americanism, anti-imperialism, and the influences of Algeria and Vietnam.
