This book offers a comprehensive introduction to decision-making in an MCDM framework. Designed as a tutorial, it presents the main concepts and methods to be applied, together with essential background information. This includes the concept of nondominance, Simon’s bounded rationality, Tversky and Kahneman’s prospect theory, and the concepts of behavioral vs. mathematical convergence and premature stopping put forward by Korhonen, Moskowitz and Wallenius. The book concludes with a non-technical review of many popular decision algorithms, including the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), VIMDA, and a number of classic interactive man-machine algorithms. In essence, the book is a “one-stop” source on everything you need to know about managerial decision-making in the multiple-criteria setting.

Had enough of people insisting you believe things that aren’t true? Then maybe this book is for you. If you prefer fantasy and propaganda over facts and logic, then don’t read this book. But if you like logic and facts and simplicity that make sense, then this is the book for you. This book breaks from the traditions of popular philosophy; instead it is a philosophical synthesis that progresses from a few simple ideas to present a comprehensive view of the world that makes sense.

Do you despair about the divisiveness, the hatred, and the lack of compassion in our social world? Are you looking for a better way to manage the complexities and demands of 21st century social life? Well, this book offers just such a way. Following the adage of Einstein, that you cannot solve problems with the mindset that created it, you are introduced to a new way of thinking and acting that opens up possibilities for a more hopeful future than the one we currently face. The new mindset presumes that we create our social worlds in communication, that our relationships with people matter deeply to the quality of our lives and that living with difference enriches us. The authors draw on the Theory of the Co-ordinated Management of Meaning for inspiration, making dense concepts and technical language more accessible so that you can use the theory. You are introduced to such notions as relational beings, self-reflexivity and storied worlds, along with what it can mean to engage in joint action, dialogue and cosmopolitan communication. By drawing on these ideas and implementing them in our everyday interpersonal communication, the authors show how changing our communication practices can bring about social and cultural change.

Making Better Places: Urban Design Now discusses how to make better places: how monotonous or rich urban development can be, how appropriate to traffic requirements urban improvements are, or how sustainable an urban design approach can be to existing and future urban dispersal. The book reviews the gap existing between the various environmental disciplines leading to the emergence of urban design; as well as the gap between the rhetoric and practical achievements of urban design. The practice of urban design entails the premise that environments are to be created and transformed to provide the most opportunities for the largest number of people. By using an urban tissue plan, the urban developmental planner can produce and evaluate site development appraisal and design proposals. The book also provides an abstract perspective that considers built forms as a set of signs to provide a mechanism which shows the modification of urban space. The text also addresses the issue of urban change in established centers, the urban fringe and beyond, as well as cites four examples of exploration by intervention. The book can prove beneficial to urban planners, sociologists, and policy makers involved in urban and social development.
