The bad news is that substance abuse today costs the average American business more than 25 percent of annual profits through added health care and compensation expenses, poor productivity, liability, theft, and impaired decision making. The good news is that substance abuse represents your largest, single, changeable operating cost. Eliminate it from your workplace, and both profits and productivity are certain to increase dramatically. Here's a timely, much-needed book that offers legally sound, clinically-based guidelines for setting up a comprehensive identification and intervention program to deal with drug and alcohol problems at your company. Written by two of America's leading experts in the field of substance abuse, Creating and Maintaining the Drug-Free Work force features a proven "win-win" approach that has been shown capable of motivating even the most troubled employees to get clean and stay clean. You'll learn the legal grounds for employer intervention, as defined by current federal and state laws and regulations; telltale signs that indicate a particular employee may be abusing alcohol or drugs; the pros and cons of conducting pre-employment for-cause, post-accident, random, or re-entry drug testing; how to intervene successfully when you lack hard evidence of substance abuse (early intervention) and the different methods to use when you have proof that a problem exists (late intervention); what you need to know up-front about the "addiction syndrome" - a pattern of denial, deceit, and dependency that is common to all substance abusers; how to use education and supervisor training to raise employee awareness and prevent future problems from arising; when, where, and how to utilize outside counselors, treatment providers, and self-help recovery programs, with an in-depth analysis that compares all of these various options; how to supervise re-entry, establish a companywide support system, and prevent relapses from occurring; and much more!

Since 1986, when America's current perception of a drug abuse crisis in the workplace began, many challenges and potential solutions have been identified. As we enter the 1990s, real progress in awareness and action has been made in many public and private American workplaces. However, the most important accomplishment--actual reduction in the number of persons using drugs in the workforce--is considerably more difficult to achieve. Research is being conducted in a number of employment settings to document how this can be done. While the results to date are encouraging, it is also clear that much remains to be done. Evidence from the national research reported in this book shows that many organizations regard their achievements on this front as modest at best, even though they have installed systematic programs aimed at reducing the problems of worker drug abuse. The organizational change approach required to achieve drug-free workplaces is the main subject of this book. Based upon findings from a three-year national research study, Thomas Backer and Kirk O'Hara examine what has been done to combat drug abuse in the workplace. They place the results of their inquiry within the larger context of organizational change theory. The critical secondary issues of responses to AIDS in the workplace and containing employer health care costs through managed care are also addressed. This book's focus on programmatic responses to workplace drug abuse at the day-to-day implementation level will be welcomed by substance abuse professionals, designers and directors of employee assistance programs, human resources and benefits professionals, and managers concerned about substance abuse in the workplace.

A staggering 98% of all private-sector businesses in the U.S. are small businesses. With very few exceptions, these employers are required to purchase workers¿ compensation insurance. For many, the cost of providing that coverage takes a significant bite out of their company¿s profits. Unfortunately, resources that are specifically targeted to assist small businesses reduce their workers¿ compensation costs are nearly non-existent. As a result, the overwhelming majority of small business employers learn how to manage their workers¿ compensation costs through years of trial and error. Unfortunately, they pay for those errors through much higher than necessary workers¿ compensation premiums. CHOMP COMP is written specifically to small businesses owners and managers and is intended to be used as a resource and guide. Although CHOMP COMP assumes that the reader knows nothing about workers¿ compensation insurance, it does not delve into impractical timelines explainaing the evolution of workers¿ compensation insurance. Nor does it list specific details about workers¿ compensation legislation that are bound to change within months of the book¿s publication. Instead, CHOMP COMP provides practical information to help small business employers understand workers¿ compensation insurance and the factors that influence premiums. From there, it tackles the those factors one after another. The authors have taken great effort to present the material in an easy to-read format and have intentionally limited the length of the chapters to enable small business employers to read and digest chapters in the spare 15 to 20 minutes they can carve out of their busy schedules.
