For five years, Konrad has imprisoned himself and his crippled wife in an abandoned lime works where he’s conducted odd auditory experiments and prepared to write his masterwork, The Sense of Hearing. As the story begins, he’s just blown the head off his wife with the Mannlicher carbine she kept strapped to her wheelchair. The murder and the bizarre life that led to it are the subject of a mass of hearsay related by an unnamed life-insurance salesman in a narrative as mazy, byzantine, and mysterious as the lime works—Konrad’s sanctuary and tomb.

Spatial Representations Of British Identities written by Merle Tönnies and has been published by Universitatsverlag Winter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with English literature categories.

This volume of concentrates on the relationship between representations of space and the formation of personal and group identities. Resulting from the 2009 conference of the German Association for the Study of British Cultures at Paderborn University, the papers share a special focus on the ways in which literary texts construct and/or undermine coherent spaces and thereby shape their protagonists' search for a functioning sense of self. In addition, the portrayal and reading of spaces in other (particularly visual) media will also play an important role. Readers are thereby offered a comprehensive and comparative overview of spatially grounded identity representations in the British Isles, with a temporal focus on the period from the 19th to the 21st century. Thus, the volume constitutes a valuable contribution to a vibrant discussion which - after the 'spatial turn' - is taking place in many fields of literary and cultural studies.

Originating in the collaboration of the international Research Network “Gender in Antisemitism, Orientalism and Occidentalism” (RENGOO), this collection of essays proposes to intervene in current debates about historical constructions of Jewish identity in relation to colonialism and Orientalism. The network‌’s collaborative research addresses imaginative and aesthetic rather than sociological questions with particular focus on the function of gender and sexuality in literary, scholarly and artistic transformations of Orientalist images. RENGOO’s first publication explores the ways in which stereotypes of the external and internal Other intertwine. With its interrogation of the roles assumed in this interplay by gender, processes of sexualization, and aesthetic formations, the volume suggests new directions to the interdisciplinary study of gender, antisemitism, and Orientalism.

Contemporary Sephardic And Mizrahi Literature written by Dario Miccoli and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-21 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book argues that the literary texts produced by Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews who migrated from the Middle East and North Africa in the 1950s onwards, should be considered as part of a transnational arena, in which forms of Jewish diasporism and postcolonial displacement interweave. Through an original perspective that focuses on novelists, poets, professional and amateur writers, the book explains that these Sephardic and Mizrahi authors are part of a global literary diaspora at the crossroads of past Arab legacies, new national identities and persistent feelings of Jewishness.

How do young Israelis and Germans communicate about National Socialism and the Holocaust? In this collection of essays, authors from both societies elaborate on the past, their present and, respectively, their identity. They ponder various switches of track through German-Israeli exchange as well as social and political realities in both countries. By highlighting marginalised memories such as Palestinian and migrant ones, they challenge monolithic national memory discourses. Altogether, a trans-national memory discourse emerges - albeit a dissonant and highly subjective one, truthfully reflecting some of the fragmentations that actually exist in both societies.

Passing Illusions written by Kerry Wallach and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-22 with History categories.

Weimar Germany (1919–33) was an era of equal rights for women and minorities, but also of growing antisemitism and hostility toward the Jewish population. This led some Jews to want to pass or be perceived as non-Jews; yet there were still occasions when it was beneficial to be openly Jewish. Being visible as a Jew often involved appearing simultaneously non-Jewish and Jewish. Passing Illusions examines the constructs of German-Jewish visibility during the Weimar Republic and explores the controversial aspects of this identity—and the complex reasons many decided to conceal or reveal themselves as Jewish. Focusing on racial stereotypes, Kerry Wallach outlines the key elements of visibility, invisibility, and the ways Jewishness was detected and presented through a broad selection of historical sources including periodicals, personal memoirs, and archival documents, as well as cultural texts including works of fiction, anecdotes, images, advertisements, performances, and films. Twenty black-and-white illustrations (photographs, works of art, cartoons, advertisements, film stills) complement the book’s analysis of visual culture.

In the wake of World War II and the Holocaust, it seemed there was no place for German in Israel and no trace of Hebrew in Germany — the two languages and their cultures appeared as divergent as the directions of their scripts. Yet when placed side by side on opposing pages, German and Hebrew converge in the middle. Comprised of essays on literature, history, philosophy, and the visual and performing arts, this volume explores the mutual influence of two linguistic cultures long held as separate or even as diametrically opposed. From Moses Mendelssohn’s arrival in Berlin in 1748 to the recent wave of Israeli migration to Berlin, the essays gathered here shed new light on the painful yet productive relationship between modern German and Hebrew cultures.
