The transmission of malaria in Sri Lanka is unstable; its incidence greatly fluctuates from year to year and exhibits important variations within a year. Identification of the underlying risk factors of malaria is important to target the limited resources for the most-effective control of the disease. This report presents the first results of a project on malaria risk mapping to investigate whether this tool could be utilized to forecast malaria epidemics. It documents the key malaria risk factors for the Uda Walawe region of Sri Lanka, where monthly malaria incidence data were available over a 10-year period. In the study, data on aggregate malaria-incidence rates, land-use and water-use patterns, socioeconomic features and malaria-control interventions were collected and analyzed in a geographical information system. Malaria cases were mapped at the smallest administrative level and relative risks for different variables were calculated employing multivariate analyses. The findings of the study call for malaria-control strategies that are readily adapted to different ecological and epidemiological settings.

The SolarMal project aims to reduce the malaria vector population of Rusinga Island, Kenya. Within this project there is information about the spatial and temporal component of those vectors, but analyses with those data where never performed. While those components are important determinants of vector abundance and spread. Therefore, the objective of this study was to study the spatial relationship between specific land use patterns and malaria vector abundance for the two crop growing seasons (March and October) separately in the SolarMal study area, Rusinga Island. The first step was to perform land use classifications for both seasons on basis of information about the different crop types occurring on the island. Furthermore data gathered in the field for two study areas in October 2013 and February/March 2014 about the different land use classes was used for this. The classifications were validated by means of an error matrix via which the total accuracy of the different classifications was calculated. The relational analysis by means of ordinary least squares (OLS) was performed in ArcGIS 10.1. The final products are the two agricultural land use classification maps, validation results and the coefficients of determination for the OLS analysis of the relationship between vector abundance and land use patterns. The validation results for the land use classifications were

The model showed sensitivity primarily to surface roughness but also to root zone uptake. This study indicates that land cover type, as well as spatial relations to breeding habitats, plays an important role in determining the formation and persistence of successful breeding habitats in water-limited environments, and thereby has an impact on mosquito abundance and malaria transmission. This study suggests that a more detailed representation of the role of vegetation in soil moisture variability and runoff generation would improve both regional malaria risk models and models that focus on smaller scale hydrological processes. This modeling approach can be applied to assess relative risk of malaria transmission as it is affected by expected and observed changes in land use and climate.

Malaria remains one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. Matian van Soest looks at the malaria epidemic in the peri-urban zones of Uganda's capital Kampala against the backdrop of recent socio-ecological transformations. Based on long-term ethnographic research, the book provides a holistic picture of the malaria epidemic in central Uganda, revealing the highly localized character of an epidemic that once spanned across almost the entire globe. Understanding, and ultimately tackling the disease, requires an appreciation of the social, political, as well as ecological circumstances that frame this epidemic.

The gained from this study is that, the man-biting rates of mosquitoes correlated significantly with agricultural activities and other land use types. The study reports for the first time that; the man biting rates of An. gambiae s. l. and An. funestus are associated with proximity to piggery units in Dar es Salaam city. The man-biting rates of An. gambiae s. l. were also correlated with proximity to temporary wells. Aedes spp. man-biting rate was associated with proximity to bovid and poultry units. However, Culex spp. And Mansonia spp. man-biting rates were associated with proximity to streams and drains. The study documents that the diverse land use types and the presence of multiple distinct habitat types promote proliferation of mosquitoes from all genera. In many households in Dar es Salaam, these land use types occur in combination.

This book investigates the spatial distribution of potential temperature-driven malaria transmissions, using the basic reproduction rate (R0) to model the reproduction of the malaria pathogen Plasmodium vivax. The authors mapped areas at risk of an outbreak of tertian malaria in the federal state of Lower Saxony (pre-study) and for whole Germany (main-study) by means of geostatistics for past (1947-2007) and future periods. Projections based on predicted monthly mean air temperature data derived from the IPCC and regionally discriminated by two regional climate models (REMO, WettReg) for the countrywide study.
