MALE CRIME AND DEVIANCE seeks to explore in-depth the types of offenses most identified with and committed by males, dynamics of male crime, characteristics of male offenders, how male criminality and delinquency compare with and differ from female delinquent and criminal behavior, explanations for male crime, and efforts at combating crime in this country. Particular attention is given to exploring the relationship between male aggression and masculinity, as well as the role that testosterone and other biological factors play in male crime and violence. The book also focuses on the correlation between male violence and aggressive behavior and firearms, violence involving intimates, male sexual violence, bias crimes, workplace violence, terrorism, male perpetrated sexual offenses, youth gang crime, and school violence. These areas of male criminality and deviance are examined within the context of all male offending, arrest, self-report, and inmate data, along with criminological theoretical approaches to understanding the causes and related factors of male deviant behavior. The book is written primarily for undergraduate and graduate level students for coursework in criminal justice, criminology, male aggression, violent behavior, homicide, youth studies, gang studies, delinquency, law, law enforcement, sociology, social science, psychology, biology, and related areas of study. However, it is appropriate as well for academicians, social scientists, psychologists, law officers, medical workers, and a general readership with a vested interest in antisocial behavior and its implications on the greater society.

The gender gap in offending is the fact that, for most measures of crime, men consistently comprise a majority of offenders; it is one of the most persistent empirical patterns in criminology. This project experimentally tests whether these gender-deviance associations are sensitive to contexts where gender identity (e.g., how masculine or feminine someone is) may be more or less threatened. Prior scholarship has found that men become more likely to commit deviance in response to identity threats, but there has been far less research comparing how men and women respond in similar scenarios. Also underexplored is how emotional responses moderate any relationship between identity threats and deviance.Data were collected from 703 Black and white men and women through Amazon Mechanical Turk and Prolific. Participants were randomly assigned to read either a vignette designed to threaten their gender identity or a neutral vignette. Participants then indicated how they would feel in such a situation and how they would likely respond. The relationship between gender identity, identity threat, emotions, and deviance was modeled using multiple Bayesian logistic regressions with physical violence, drug abuse, relational aggression, and public health deviance as outcomes. Results indicated that participants with higher levels of masculinity had a higher likelihood of reporting public health deviance, drug abuse, and physical violence, while participants with higher levels of femininity had a higher likelihood of reporting relational aggression and physical violence. Having higher levels of masculinity and femininity also increased the likelihood of reporting strong, negative emotions in response to a threat to gender identity. Stronger emotions, in turn, increased the likelihood of responding to identity threats with deviance. These findings indicate that our understanding of the gender-deviance correlation can be improved by measuring identity processes that lead to deviance, such as emotions in response to identity threats.

This book sensitizes the reader to the fact that there is substantial disagreement within the academic community, and among policymakers and the general public, over what behaviors, conditions (e.g., physical attributes), and people should be designated as deviant or criminal. Normative conceptions, the societal reaction/labeling approach, and the critical approach are offered as frameworks within which to study these definitions. A comprehensive explanation of theory and social policy on deviance is constructed.
