German Colonialism In Africa And Its Legacies written by Itohan Osayimwese and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-23 with Art categories.

Germany developed a large colonial empire over the last thirty years of the 19th century, spanning regions of the west coast of Africa to its east coast and beyond. Largely forgotten for many years, recent intense debates about Africa's cultural heritage in European museums have brought this period of African and German history back into the spotlight. German Colonialism in Africa and its Legacies brings much-needed context to these debates, exploring perspectives on the architecture, art, urbanism, and visual culture of German colonialism in Africa, and its legacies in postcolonial and present-day Namibia, Cameroon, and Germany. The first in-depth exploration of the designed and visual aspects of German colonialism, the book presents a series of essays combining formal analyses of painting, photography, performance art, buildings, and space with the discourse analysis approach associated with postcolonial theory. Covering the entire period from the build-up to colonialism in the early-19th century to the present, subjects covered range from late-19th-century German colonial paintings of African landscapes and people to German land appropriation through planning and architectural mechanisms, and from indigenous African responses to colonial architecture, to explorations of the legacies of German colonialism by contemporary artists today. This powerful and revealing collection of essays will encourage new research on this under-explored topic, and demonstrate the importance of historical research to the present, especially with regards to ongoing debates about the presence of material legacies of colonialism in Western culture, museum collections, and immigration policies.

Goethe S Faust I Outlined written by Evanghelia Stead and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-24 with Literary Criticism categories.

In a new approach to Goethe's Faust I, Evanghelia Stead extensively discusses Moritz Retzsch's twenty-six outline prints (1816) and how their spin-offs made the unfathomable play available to larger reader communities through copying and extensive distribution circuits, including bespoke gifts. The images amply transformed as they travelled throughout Europe and overseas, revealing differences between countries and cultures but also their pliability and resilience whenever remediated. This interdisciplinary investigation evidences the importance of print culture throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in nations involved in competition and conflict. Retzsch's foundational set crucially engenders parody, and inspires the stage, literature, and three-dimensional objects, well beyond common perceptions of print culture's influence. This book is available in open access thanks to an Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) grant.

Concentrating on Europe, this volume's sixteen essays discuss different forms of medievalism in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Serbia. Medievalism, the whole spectrum of post-medieval response to the middle ages, is now accepted as a vital key to the understanding of Western culture and society from 1500 to the present, pervading every aspect of our time, from the popular and artistic to the scholarly. Studies in Medievalism, now published annually, is the one series to provide a regular forum for discussion of medievalism. This volume is devoted to medievalism in Europe, excludingEngland (the subject of Volume IV,1992). Contributors from Europe and America consider medievalism in Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Serbia over a wide range of topics from eighteenth-century French politics and nineteenth-century German nationalism to contemporary Italian film.

Beyond The Dutch written by Meta Knol and has been published by Kit Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Art categories.

"Beyond the Dutch" gives a colourful picture of that struggle. Leading artists, curators and historians from Indonesia and the Netherlands have pored over a series of questions posed by the history of art in the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia. What was and still is Dutch about Indonesian art? What relationship does it have with Western techniques and views on art? How does contemporary art in Indonesia and the Netherlands allow for the links between the two countries? And how do we actually perceive Indonesian art? The book takes three cross-sections through fine art in the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia: the colonial period around 1900, decolonisation and independence around 1950, and the current, post-colonial period around 2000. Only by taking a detailed look at these three pivotal moments can a clear picture be obtained of the turbulent development of art in Indonesia.
