The phenomenon of the European Grand Tour to Italy, Sicily, or France has been extensively treated, but its extension to Malta has never analyzed at length. The term 'Grand Tour' is mainly used to describe the European giro in the eighteenth century, but, to present a fuller picture, this book includes the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as well as the first decades of the nineteenth century. It throws light on the role of Malta in the period of the Ancien Régime, which in itself implies a certain homogeneity in European society and culture. As this was the period when the island was governed by the cosmopolitan Order of St John, many phenomena and developments of European culture also found their echoes in the microcosm of Malta. The travellers' tales and descriptions reflect this development. A closer look at the single cases of the European travellers suggests that the remote Malta of the Knights kept on attracting a tremendous number of visitors. In spite of the upheavals, crises, and often deep uncertainty that mark the early modern period of European history, remote Malta was the focus of the interest for Catholics as well as Protestants, and people from France, Spain, Italy, England, the German lands, and the Scandinavian countries. This book embraces the whole colourful spectrum of visitors to Malta when it was ruled by the Order of St John. Visitors' perception did not change much when, after the short intermezzo of the French occupation, British Malta remained a magnet for travelers. In fact nineteenth-century Malta was honoured with the visits of some of the greatest names of European culture and politics: Flaubert, Lamartine, Scott, Thackeray, Dumas, Gogol, Andersen, Byron, Verne, Garibaldi, Nelson, and Disraeli, to name but a few. Others, like Coleridge, were temporary residents. This book ends in the late nineteenth century when the Moloch of industrialization had laid its strangling grip on nearly all aspects of life and culture. It also started to sweep away the last patina of nostalgic, romantic, and adventurous travelling, as the era of mass tourism lay on the horizon.

The Grand Tour has become a subject of major interest to scholars and general readers interested in exploring the historic connections between nations and their intellectual and artistic production. Although traditionally associated with the eighteenth century, when wealthy Englishmen would complete their education on the continent, the Grand Tour is here investigated in a wider context, from the decline of the Roman Empire to recent times. Authors from Chaucer to Erasmus came to mock the custom but even the Reformation did not stop the urge to travel. From the mid-sixteenth century, northern Europeans justified travel to the south in terms of education. The English had previously travelled to Italy to study the classics; now they travelled to learn Italian and study medicine, diplomacy, dancing, riding, fencing, and, eventually, art and architecture. Famous men, and an increasing proportion of women, all contributed to establishing a convention which eventually came to dominate European culture. Documenting the lives and travels of these personalities, Professor Chaney's remarkable book provides a complete picture of one of the most fascinating phenomena in the history of western civilisation.

The volumes detail the travels of an educated Englishman and his dog, mainly in Greece, Italy, and Germany. After the tour of the title (Volume 1), the author, with his brother Joe and James Smithson, continued from Malta to Sicily, and then to Naples, Rome, Florence, and Venice, after which they pass quickly through Germany. The diary is illustrated with pen and ink sketches of views and monuments, many of which are by John McKerrell, who also made part of the tour with those named above. Also contained in the account are many geographical and nautical details, as well as comments on ancient and modern works of art, architecture, archeology, transcriptions or inscriptions, and quotations from ancient and modern literature. The author gives full itineraries - many with nautical conditions - and also records a number of purchases of paintings in Rome.

Lord Byron's Grand Tour is recorded as impressions in his own letters and journals, more methodically in the diary of his travelling companion John Cam Hobhouse, and reflected poetically in the first two cantos of the epic poem that was to make his fame and start his legend. Lord Strathcarron's re-Tour follows in Byron’s footsteps, revisiting the places the poet visited two hundred years ago and comparing what he found then to what one finds there now. At each point the re-Tour meets today’s equivalents to the kings, consuls, governors, chieftains and gangsters that the Grand Tour met before it. Witty and perceptive, the re-Tour reveals much about Lord Byron and much too about how the world has changed in two centuries.
