A Confederação Nagô-Macamba-Malunga dos Abolicionistas é resultado da dissertação de mestrado do autor e tem como mérito principal a abordagem empregada na análise do tema. De fato, é o que o leitor poderia esperar em se tratando de um assunto pesquisado e debatido desde há muito tempo na historiografia por pesquisadoras e pesquisadores renomados. Entretanto, não é apenas com uma abordagem original que Júlio Dória nos brinda com a sua pesquisa, mas, sobretudo, com os resultados apresentados a partir de uma análise mergulhada em fontes históricas igualmente originais que permitem ressemantizar e renomear um dos movimentos sociais mais importantes da história afro-brasileira. A trajetória do movimento é analisada sincronicamente em articulação com as trajetórias individuais daqueles que mais contribuíram para a organização da Confederação: homens negros e mestiços, das mais variadas condições sociais, mas com o devido destaque aos libertos e cativos na construção do movimento.
