Excerpt from Man and His Divine Father This book aims to bring cheer and hope to human souls. All are puzzled with the problems of their own being and happiness. This is philosophy, and all men are philosophers; but largely without method, and with poor logic, and no first principles. Hence, there is little agreement; and what is called "Reason and Common Sense" is, in a great degree, nonsense. In the chaos of opinions, we try to find the line and system of plain truth. The beginning of wisdom is knowledge of man, the knower, in himself, his powers and limitations. So we first try to discover our Self, and to portray a man. In consciousness is found a selfhood and positiveness, and a consistent, self-proving philosophy of personal life. This describes beings by their doings. It develops the conception of causation into a connected line and system of the whole philosophy of the nature, relations, and destinies of persons. It gathers to itself, and conserves, all known truth; and from it all the errors, follies, and "Isms," philosophical and religious, fall, of their own weight, discredited. This conductive philosophy rejects many, and conserves many, of the old beliefs of men. It confirms itself by rigid logic, lays itself parallel with all other philosophies and sciences, and courts the attacks of all logic that does not use consciousness and activity for its premises. Excerpt from Jesus Christ the Divine Man, His Life and Times If any apology be needed for adding another to the various lives of Christ already before the public, it may be well to state how far this little book occupies any independent ground of its own. The object of the writer has been to make some small contribution to the moral and spiritual history of the Life of lives, and this in some especial relation to missionary work and the contact of Christianity with non-Christian religions. "The ethical," as Prof Kuenen well says, "is the universal human." Ethical and spiritual sequences of cause and effect have been especially before the writers mind. The Gospel history is "a history, which in every part of it," as Weiss says, "must be considered in the light of Him who transcends all history." The superhistorical relations of the historical life have been touched upon in some of their bearings upon the past, present, and future of Christianity. Even Keim, from whose point of view the present writer wholly differs, while gladly acknowledging his great ability and learning, and not infrequent reverence of tone and enthusiasm of humanity, affirms of Christ's life that it is "bounded at its circumference by the human limitations of His age, in its centre exalted above all." Such language may imply nothing but hero worship, but it is at all events a recognition of the incomparable grandeur of Christ's life and character. While the moral and spiritual aspects of the Life have been placed in the foreground, every effort has been made to present the physical and social environment briefly, yet accurately, in the light of modern research. In this connection the archaeological and geographical labours of the Palestine Exploration Society have been largely drawn upon, and the most recent records of travel, especially those of Captain Conder, Mr. Lawrence Oliphant, and Dr. Selah Merrill. Upon the whole, the greatest obligations are due to Dr. Edersheim His wealth of Rabbinical lore, his great theological erudition, his deep sympathy with Israel, springing from the strongest of all sources, the fountain of blood relationship, and his true spirituality of touch, place his work, in the writers estimate, at the head of all the contemporary literature of the subject. Excerpt from The Divine Life in Man: And Other Sermons Often as any soul comes under the regenerating power of the gospel and is born into the kingdom. This is what is brought out with an almost start ling distinctness in the group of passages standing at the head of this discourse. Man, like God, is per sonal and spiritual. He has the source of his being in God. He has come into life in virtue of the breath Of God in his soul. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. The further development of the subject will be pro moted best by asking two or three questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Who even tries to describe the Living Being that pulses in the blood, and springs in the force of muscles, and thrills in the ardor of nerves, and that thinks, wills, loves, enjoys, suffers, hopes and fears? Excerpt from Divine Order of Development, as Traced in Nature, Man, and the Bible, by the Methods of Christ and of the Spirit The book conveys its own message to thoughtful men; it is not necessary here to enter into detailed explanations about the subject matter. The theme is Development; there is an introduction to the study; a glance at development in history, Nature, Man and the Bible. The thought that underlies all forms of development is Life, thus It is stated that God is Life that Christ has Life in all its diversities in Himself; that the Spirit of Truth reveals the Life in Christ and this Life is the Life Eternal and Immortal. God is conceived as Grace, revealed to men, as Divine Love, in a body of Sacrifice, that is in Divine Travail. Christ is referred to as the Divine Inheritance of the Saints. The Spirit of Christ is the Perfect Divine or the Spirit of Truth; the harmony and unity of the works of the Spirit are revealed to men in the Divine Purpose of Grace, as revealed in the Bible. God is Eternal Life; the Lord of Life expresses the Divine unity in these words: That they all may be one as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I m Thee, that they also may be one in us that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me. I in them, and Thou in Me, lthat they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them, as Thou hast loved Me. In these, the deepest mystical thoughts of Christ, what men find is the want of unity in mankind the serious separation of men from God the union in the Spirit of Father and Son; this union in Grace conveyed to mankind in Christ so that there may be brought about in the universe perfect peace in love. In the light of these thoughts, the family of Adam, and the parable of the prodigal son, may be studied, as teaching the same truths. Adam as the fallen race Cain the first-born Son Abel the Shepherd and Martyr; and Seth the one who takes the place of Abel. In the parable, the story is about a family where there is a prodigal son, selfish, self - asserting and disobedient, who claims his portion and comes to want there is an elder brother who stays at home and yet lives far from his father in Spirit there is One who prepares the way for repentance, pardon and peace, unnoticed; and, there is the Spirit of the Father looking and longing for the returning prodigal; going forth to meet him With glad welcome and manifold blessings. In the Bible, from beginning to end, the same forms of truth are being repeated under new conditions. 15 it not so that the great curse of this age is to be found in that prodigal Spirit of humanity that has departed from the Father and from Home? What men require is to come to themselves, to become sane in mind, to repent and to make confession of sin. This has ever been the mystic vision through all the ages it is that God is Love, and that He loves, and is waiting to be gracious, to bestow His blessings upon those who return to Him. Excerpt from The Man and His Message: Addresses The addresses which are published in this volume express the life purpose which eh riched the ministry of my father. With him, sin was a reality which could be met only by the love of a Divine Saviour; and his happiest moments, whether in the active work of the pastorate at Englewood, or amid the student life at Auburn, were in proclaiming the love of Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. With this confidence, he labored; and when his work was finished, he quietly laid down his task and stood in the presence of the Master. The Man for the Message, is his inau gural address when inducted into the office of President, and Professor of Practical Theology in Auburn Seminary, in October, 1893.
