Excerpt from Man, in His Intellectual Faculties and Adaptations The object of this volume is, in some sort, to supply the desideratum, - to call the attention of the reader to the ground upon which, and upon which alone, the immortal hopes of mankind can be founded. I have attempted to do this by means of statements and illustrations which are familiar to all who think, and to express them in the most simple and familiar language, so that the work may be equally intelligible to the unlearned and the learned. 1 am aware that there are dificulties to be overcome in this, for I have felt them, and also felt my own inability to grapple with some of them in the way that I could have desired. If, however, I have not accomplished all that one who is desirous of obtaining full information upon this subject may wish for, I have endeavoured to point out the means whereby that which is desired may be obtained; and these means have so little to do with what is usually called learning, and are so much in the power of every man who chooses to make a right use of them, that little more is necessary than the calling of attention to them; and this, accordingly, is the principal object which has been aimed at. But, though apparently a very simme object, it is one which is very difficult to accomplish. We have to supply, in the very first element of the philosophy of mind, that which the senses, without any study on our part, supply in the philosophy of matter; and there is no complete analogy by means of which we can pass from the physical to the mental, so as to make the one a continuation of the other. Excerpt from On the Adaptation of External Nature to the Physical Condition of Man, Principally With Reference to the Supply of His Wants, and the Exercise of His Intellectual Faculties In the mineral kingdom the most characteristic property of the se veral species appears to be a disposition to a pecular mode of mutual attraction among the particles composing the individuals belonging to them; from which attraction, when exerted under the most favour able circumstances, result that symmetry and regularity of form, to which the term crystal has been applied. The transparency and degree of hardness of crystals are various, and depend much upon external circumstances. The form is fundamentally the same for each species, though capable of being modified according to known laws; and the substance is chemically the same throughout its whole extent. Every atom of a crystallized mass of gypsum consists of water, lime, and sulphuric acid, united in the same proportions as are found to exist in the whole mass, or in any given part of it.
