Winner of the Governor General's Award for non-fiction, Man's Emerging Mind is a startlingly prescient examination of how humanity's evolutionary past shapes not only human nature but the human future. Berrill draws on the findings of paleontology and evolutionary biology to paint a vivid picture of man's evolution and provide insight into what the future holds. In its consideration of the immense social, cultural, and environmental problems facing humanity, Man's Emerging Mind is as relevant today as when it was first published in 1955.

Emerging Minds written by Robert S. Siegler and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-10-29 with Psychology categories.

How do children acquire the vast array of concepts, strategies, and skills that distinguish the thinking of infants and toddlers from that of preschoolers, older children, and adolescents? In this new book, Robert Siegler addresses these and other fundamental questions about children's thinking. Previous theories have tended to depict cognitive development much like a staircase. At an early age, children think in one way; as they get older, they step up to increasingly higher ways of thinking. Siegler proposes that viewing the development within an evolutionary framework is more useful than a staircase model. The evolution of species depends on mechanisms for generating variability, for choosing adaptively among the variants, and for preserving the lessons of past experience so that successful variants become increasingly prevalent. The development of children's thinking appears to depend on mechanisms to fulfill these same functions. Siegler's theory is consistent with a great deal of evidence. It unifies phenomena from such areas as problem solving, reasoning, and memory, and reveals commonalities in the thinking of people of all ages. Most important, it leads to valuable insights regarding a basic question about children's thinking asked by cognitive, developmental, and educational psychologists: How does change occur?

Notes For A New Mind written by William Dell and has been published by Universal-Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Health & Fitness categories.

What is known about the split brain is reviewed, in a historical context, as a paradigm for a new mind. The poetry of William Wordsworth is examined as a precursor to this mentality. The possibility of a new mind (and its new myth: the deconstruction) emerging from the split brain in the modern world is set forth. The last issue of consciousness, perhaps, is not the resolution of duality, but is the multiform periphery. The question is: am I more than my brain?

For many decades, the proponents of `artificial intelligence' have maintained that computers will soon be able to do everything that a human can do. In his bestselling work of popular science, Sir Roger Penrose takes us on a fascinating tour through the basic principles of physics, cosmology, mathematics, and philosophy to show that human thinking can never be emulated by a machine. Oxford Landmark Science books are 'must-read' classics of modern science writing which have crystallized big ideas, and shaped the way we think.

Brave New Mind written by Peter Dodwell and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-06-08 with Philosophy categories.

How was the standard model of the mind developed? Is it adequate? And is there a place in this model for the creative genius of artists, scientists, and mathematicians? This book looks at how scientists investigate the nature of the mind and the brain, providing answers to these important questions. It opens with a description of the historical roots of cognitive science and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the standard model of the mind, including its inability to account for the many dramatic features of human achievement. The final chapter develops the notion that human creativity and the unfolding of human consciousness demand two things: that we acknowledge the central role that ideals play in human knowledge and conduct and that such ideals have no role in the standard model. Brave New Mind proposes a new image of humankind that accommodates the place of ideals and creativity in cognition and life, without abandoning the scientific ideals of empirical soundness and theoretical rigor.
