The Modern Management Of Mental Handicap written by G.B. Simon and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

The aim of this book is to provide parents, staff and others involved with mentally handicapped children and adults with up to-date basic information and advice in their management. Methods of care, treatment and management of a heterogeneous group of people such as the mentally handicapped must of necessity include many disciplines if they are to be given an adequate service. This book is an attempt to bring the knowledge and experience of many people together. The size of the book could have been increased to include more detail on other aspects of the subject but this might easily have diminished its value as a convenient reference to as wide a readership as possible, both professional and non-professional. The contents deal essentially with the needs of the severely mentally handicapped and should have an application in most parts of the world. Much of the information and advice on services, and on treatment and management, is based on the experience of specialists working in the United Kingdom, this now being standard practice in most parts of the world.

Children with disabilities and complex medical and educational needs present a special challenge for policy makers and practitioners. These children exhibit tremendous heterogeneity in their conditions and needs, requiring a varied array of services to meet those needs. Uneven public and professional awareness of their conditions and a research base marked by significant gaps have led to programs, practices, and policies that are inconsistent in quality and coverage. Parents often have to navigate and coordinate, largely on their own, a variety of social, medical, and educational support services, adding to the already daunting financial, logistical, and emotional challenges of raising children with special needs. The unmet needs of children with disabilities and complex medical and educational needs can cause great suffering for these children and for those who love and care for them. To examine how systems can be configured to meet the needs of children and families as they struggle with disabilities and complex health and educational needs, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop in December 2015. The goal of the workshop was to highlight the main barriers and promising solutions for improving care and outcome of children with complex medical and educational needs. Workshop participants examined prevention, care, service coordination, and other topics relevant to children with disabilities and complex health and educational needs, along with their families and caregivers. More broadly, the workshop seeks actionable understanding on key research questions for enhancing the evidence base; promoting and sustaining the quality, accessibility, and use of relevant programs and services; and informing relevant policy development and implementation. By engaging in dialogue to connect the prevention, treatment, and implementation sciences with settings where children are seen and cared for, the forum seeks to improve the lives of children by improving the systems that affect those children and their families. This publications summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Visual Diagnosis And Care Of The Patient With Special Needs written by Taub and has been published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Medical categories.

Visual Diagnosis and Care of the Patient with Special Needs provides a thorough review of the eye and vision care needs of patients with special needs. This book gives you a better understanding of the most frequently encountered developmental and acquired disabilities seen in the eye care practitioner's office. These disabilities include patients with autism, brain injury, Fragile X syndrome and Down syndrome, as well as those with psychiatric illness, dual diagnosis, and more. The text discusses, in great detail, the visual issues inherent in these populations and their possible treatment. A group of authors with approximately 500 years of experience in the field of eye care and special populations have been brought together to develop this comprehensive reference. It may appear that this book is written primarily for eye care practitioners such as optometrists and ophthalmologists, while vision is the overriding topic, this book serves as an excellent resource for a multitude of professions including those engaged in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, physiatry, social work, pediatric medicine, and special education.

"This book should be a great help for parents of a child with any handicap."--Dr. Benjamin Spock "I think parenting is probably the hardest job there is, if it is done well, and parenting a handicapped child takes immense dedication, energy, and self-knowledge. If even one of my suggestions makes your life easier or improves your child's life, then the time and energy I have put into this book will be rewarded many times over. Most of the parents of handicapped children seem to me extraordinary people, and the care and love they show their children are among the highest tributes to the human spirit."--Charlotte E. Thompson, MD Practical, complete, reassuring advice on: * Coping with tragedy: How to handle the sorrow, anger, and guilt of a devastating diagnosis or a progressive disease * Heath care: How to find the best professional help; keep up with new treatments, medications, and research; and cope with the costs * Education and development: How to select educational programs that are geared to specific disabilities and designed to fulfill your child's greatest potential in adolescence * Family and friends: How parents can help themselves and each other, how to help siblings adjust, and what to tell well-meaning friends and relatives * Fun for handicapped kids: A comprehensive guide to places that are accessible to handicapped children "An accessible and sensitively written handbook."--Boston Herald
