The transport of organisms by humans to new ecosystems where they become nonnatives or exotic species is common. Many of these introduced organisms become invasive, and represent a worldwide concern. The invasion process can be complex and not all introduced organisms are successful invaders. One of the most successful invasive ants in the world is the little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata), which was reportedly introduced to the tropical island of Puerto Rico over a hundred years ago. In this study, population structure and heterozygosity levels of the little fire W. auropunctata between ecological life zones of the island were evaluated through micosatellite data. The results of this study should expand the understanding in the invasion processes, forms of adaptations (Unicoloniality) and success of the little fire ant W. auropunctata in Puerto Rico and worldwide.

Many species prey upon the threatened gopher tortoises, including the Red Imported Fire Ant Solenopsis invicta. While human alterations to native habitat have led to a decline in gopher tortoises, "disturbance specialists" like S. invicta often thrive on such changes. This study examines three ant surveys at gopher tortoise burrows within a section of residential "greenway" in southeastern Florida before and after "reduction mowing". While the presence of S. invicta did decrease after the reduction mowing, the numbers of native ants and ant species richness in general also showed a significant decline. Another invasive ant, the Little Fire Ant, Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger, 1863), showed a significant increase after the mowing. While not as destructive as S. invicta, W. auropunctata has been documented to be a significant pest to many terrestrial vertebrates and should be considered a potential threat in future gopher tortoise and land management schemes.

Biological Control: Global Impacts, Challenges and Future Directions of Pest Management provides a historical summary of organisms and main strategies used in biological control, as well as the key challenges confronting biological control in the 21st century. Biological control has been implemented for millennia, initially practised by growers moving beneficial species from one local area to another. Today, biological control has evolved into a formal science that provides ecosystem services to protect the environment and the resources used by humanity. With contributions from dedicated scientists and practitioners from around the world, this comprehensive book highlights important successes, failures and challenges in biological control efforts. It advocates that biological control must be viewed as a global endeavour and provides suggestions to move practices forward in a changing world. Biological Control is an invaluable resource for conservation specialists, pest management practitioners and those who research invasive species, as well as students studying pest management science.

"Islands have captured the imagination of scientists and the public for centuries - unique and rare environments, their isolation makes them natural laboratories for ecology and evolution. This authoritative, alphabetically arranged reference, featuring more than 200 succinct articles by leading scientists from around the world, provides broad coverage of all the island sciences. But what exactly is an island? The volume editors define it here as any discrete habitat isolated from other habitats by inhospitable surroundings. The Encyclopedia of Islands examines many such insular settings - oceanic and continental islands as well as places such as caves, mountaintops, and whale falls at the bottom of the ocean. This essential, one-stop resource, extensively illustrated with color photographs, clear maps, and graphics will introduce island science to a wide audience and spur further research on some of the planet's most fascinating habitats." --Book Jacket.
