This volume focuses on the theory and practice of data stream management, and the novel challenges this emerging domain poses for data-management algorithms, systems, and applications. Database research and development has been remarkably successful over the past three decades. Now the field is facing new challenges posted by the rapid advances of technology, especially the penetration of the Web and Internet into everyone's daily life. In order to provide researchers and practitioners with a forum to share their experiences in tackling problems in managing and using data, information, and knowledge in the age of the Internet and Web, the First International Conference on Web-Age Information Management (WAIM 2000) was held in Shanghai, China, June 21-23. The inaugural conference in its series was well received. Researchers from 17 countries and regions, including Austria, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, UK, and USA submitted their recent work. Our purpose in writing this book was to produce a clinically-oriented, non-multi-au thored textbook ofcardiac electrophysiology that would be useful to practicing electro physiologists, cardiologists, fellows in training as well as associated electrophysiology professionals, including nurses and technologists. While all clinical textbooks risk be coming outdated even before they're published, and few textbooks ofa manageable size can claim to be completely comprehensive, our goal was to produce a book that system atically presents a thorough discussion ofthe fundamental principles and concepts im portant to the practice of clinical electrophysiology. We do not discuss basic cellular electrophysiology for its sake alone, but instead include basic science material only when itis helpful in explaining the overlying clinical principles. Cardiac electrophysiology, as with any subspecialty, behaves as a living organism with continuous evolution of its standards and practices. However, even though the details and tools of management (catheters, drugs, devices, etc. ) may change with dazzling speed, the fundamental princi ples ofdiagnosis and management generally change very little and they remain the criti cal underpinning ofthe day-to-day management ofpatients with cardiac arrhythmias. Although programming in memory-restricted environments is never easy, this holds especially true for digital signal processing (DSP). The data-rich, computation-intensive nature of DSP makes memory management a chief and challenging concern for designers. Memory Management for Synthesis of DSP Software focuses on minimizing memory requirements during the synthesis of DSP software from dataflow representations. Dataflow representations are used in many popular DSP design tools, and the methods of this book can be applied in that context, as well as other contexts where dataflow is used. This book systematically reviews research conducted by the authors on memory minimization techniques for compiling synchronous dataflow (SDF) specifications. Beginning with an overview of the foundations of software synthesis techniques from SDF descriptions, it examines aggressive buffer-sharing techniques that take advantage of specific and quantifiable tradeoffs between code size and buffer size to achieve high levels of buffer memory optimization. The authors outline coarse-level strategies using lifetime analysis and dynamic storage allocation (DSA) for efficient buffer sharing as one approach and demonstrate the role of the CBP (consumed-before-produced) parameter at a finer level using a merging framework for buffer sharing. They present two powerful algorithms for combining these sharing techniques and then introduce techniques that are not restricted to the single appearance scheduling space of the other techniques. Extensively illustrated to clarify the mathematical concepts, Memory Management for Synthesis of DSP Software presents a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art research in DSP software synthesis.
