Pentingnya kegiatan ekspor/impor di pelabuhan khususnya, dan di suatu negara pada umumnya, menunjukkan mobilitas besarnya penawaran maupun permintaan, baik dalam negeri maupun luar negeri. Pelabuhan sendiri merupakan pintu suatu negara bagi keluar-masuknya berbagai arus, yakni arus barang ekspor/impor dan interinsuler; arus penumpang ke/dari luar negeri dan ke/dari antarpulau; arus kapal baik kapal bendera nasional maupun kapal bendera asing; arus dokumen komoditas yang melindungi barang ekspor impor; arus dokumen kapal yang melindungi kapal asing maupun kapal domestik; arus uang baik mata uang asing maupun mata uang nasional; arus virus/bakteri baik yang dibawa oleh para penumpang kapal dan anak buah kapal, contohnya flu hongkong, AIDS, kolera; serta yang dibawa oleh muatan kapal, baik yang berupa hewan, misal penyakit sapi antrax, flu burung, maupun muatan kapal yang berupa tumbuhan, yakni kutu (insect) seperti kutu loncat, hama wereng, kutu pengerat padi, penyakit kulit pohon kopi, jeruk, lamtoro, dan lainnya. Pelabuhan juga merupakan pintu keluar masuknya arus kapal, baik kapal asing maupun kapal domestik (deadweight ships' call), juga arus hewan dan produk asal hewan serta arus tumbuhan dan produk asal tumbuhan. Dengan diterbitkannya buku Manajemen Pelabuhan dan Realisasi Ekspor Impor ini diharapkan dapat menambah wawasan tentang dunia pelabuhan, seperti kemudahan dalam transaksi ekspor/impor, hambatan atau ancaman yang muncul, dan juga banyak peluang maupun kekuatan yang dimiliki oleh negara kita, sehingga di kemudian hari diharapkan bangsa kita akan semakin banyak memiliki ahli-ahli perdagangan internasional dalam dunia ekspor impor.
