Louis Ginzberg's landmark seven-volume "The Legends of the Jews" assembles the many elaborations and embellishments of Biblical stories that flourished in the centuries following the Bible's own creation. Ginzberg devoted most of his life to gathering these legends from their original sources - written in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Syrian, Aramaic, Ethiopic, Arabic, Persian, and Old Slavic - and reproducing them completely, accurately, and vividly. He presents them in their traditional Biblical sequence and reconciles the sometimes contradictory versions of the same stories found in different sources. In addition to four volumes of the legends themselves, The Legends of the Jews includes two indispensable volumes of notes, which provide the sources for every legend, as well as a comprehensive index to the people, places, and motifs found in the legends and their sources.

Absalom was of such gigantic proportions that a man who was himself of extraordinary size, standing in the eye-socket of his skull, sank in down to his nose. As for his marvellous hair, the account of it in the Bible does not convey a notion of its abundance. Absalom had taken the vow of a Nazarite. As his vow was for life, and because the growth of his hair was particularly heavy, the law permitted him to clip it slightly every week. It was of this small quantity that the weight amounted to two hundred shekels. -from "Absalom's Rebellion" The masterpiece of one of the preeminent Talmudic scholars of the 20th century, the multivolume Legends of the Jews gathers together stories from the Talmud, the Midrash, the Bible, and oral traditions-also known as the Haggada-and offers them in chronological order. Volume IV, first published in 1913, features tales of Joshua, Boaz and Ruth, Samuel and Saul, David, Solomon, Judah and Israel, Elijah, Esther, and more. A work of brilliant erudition and deep devotion, this is an invaluable collection of religious lore. American rabbi LOUIS GINZBERG (1873-1953) founded the American Academy of Jewish Research and was a prolific contributor to the Jewish Encyclopedia.

Excerpt from The Irish Prince and the Hebrew Prophet: A Masonic Tale of the Captive Jews and the Ark of the Covenant Now, whenever we find Manasseh, we must find them according to Scripture, a great people, hav ing come out and separated themselves from the house of Ephraim, bearing the same name and iden tity, speaking the same language, bearing the same cross, and proclaiming the same Christianity. The children that thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, says Isaiah. What other? Why, the house Of Manasseh, or the great people, for these, under divine blessing, were all she could ever lose, and although few in number at the time Of separation, could never be conquered. Rabbi Dr Bernard Drachman (1861-1945) was a leader of Orthodox Judaism in the USA in the early 20th century. He was born in New York to parents who were immigrants from Galicia and Bavaria, and grew up in Jersey City, NJ. His early education was at the Hebrew Preparatory School, and after graduating with a BA from Columbia College in 1882 he earned a scholarship at the Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau, Poland, where he received his rabbinic ordination in 1885. He also earned a Ph.D from the University of Heidelberg in 1884. Drachman was so influenced by the deep piety of Eastern European Jewry, with which he had come into contact for the first time, that he became entirely committed to Orthodoxy. On his return to the US he first officiated as rabbi to the Oheb Sholom congregation in Newark, NJ, next to Beth Israel Bikkur Cholim in New York City, and later to the congregation of Zichron Ephraim. Drachman assisted Dr Sabato Morais in founding the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1886 and was appointed preceptor in Biblical exegesis, Hebrew grammar, and Jewish philosophy. In 1889 he was elected dean of the faculty, a position he held until the founding of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York in 1902 when he took on the office of instructor in Bible and Hebrew grammar, and was also acting reader in codes in that institution. His aim in publishing this book of stories in 1905 was to familiarise the reader with the various aspects of Jewish life through the medium of fiction and so remove the mystery surrounding them. With illustrations by Abel George Warshawsky, and a glossary of Hebrew and other non-English terms.
