Volume 2 of A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula brings to an end this collective work that aims at surveying the network of interliterary relations in the Iberian Peninsula. No attempt at such a comparative history of literatures in the Iberian Peninsula has been made until now. «Este trabalho resultou do alargamento sucessivo dum certo estudo em princípio bastante limitado. Alguns problemas trouxeram consigo novos problemas, até esta visão panorâmica muito vasta: o maneirismo na poesia portuguesa. Tudo isto começou pela ideia, bem definida, de escrever apenas uma crítica a um livro recentemente publicado do poeta Alfredo Guisado, poeta do Orfeu, um dos representantes mais originais dessa poesia moderna a que se tem chamado barroca. Procurando auscultar o fenómeno que a palavra «barroco» recobre, admiti uma lei ou relação de constância nesse fenómeno, através da história da literatura, seja em certos casos colectivos duma literatura, seja em certos casos individuais; impôs-se-me, em seguida, a dúvida sôbre se os termos «barroco» e «barroquismo», mais particularmente designativos da literatura e da arte de uma época historicamente determinada, conviriam para designar um fenómeno de grande generalidade e repetição nos diferentes panoramas históricos das várias literaturas nacionais e da arte em geral, e, nessa mesma generalidade e repetição, revelando aspectos particulares individualizantes e com data.» Amorim de Carvalho, na Introdução à obra.
