The largest land battles ever to occur on the North American continent outside of the US Civil War took place during the Mexican Revolution, yet there has never been any scholarship approaching what might be called traditional military history, and certainly no monographs that holistically treat the topics of tactics, operations, and strategy--until now. While a common perception of the Mexican Revolution as a guerrilla war persists, author Joe Lee Janssens draws on access to the restricted archives of the Mexican Secretary of Defense and the use of long-overlooked primary sources to illuminate a scope, scale, and sophistication of operations that is in every way consistent with maneuver warfare. Covering the rise and fall of Francisco Madero from 1910 to the beginning of 1913, this first book in a fascinating series offers a fresh view of the Mexican Revolution, revealing it as, first and foremost, a crisis within the defense establishment initiated by Madero's rebellion.Introducing colorful actors, putting motives and influences (including that of the United States) into proper perspective, and exploring the role of the conflict in shaping the nation of Mexico, Dr. Janssens brings history vividly to life.

By the end of 1914 the Federal Army had been destroyed and the nation was fully mobilized for war. The Revolution Triumphant failed to agree upon a national agenda at the Convention of Aguascalientes and experienced a schism along sectional lines that bore a striking resemblance to the U.S. Civil War. The industrial Northeast and maritime regions joined the Northwest to defeat a powerful military-agricultural complex. In the ensuing campaigns of 1915, Conventionists and Constitutionalists ranged far and wide, fighting battles such as Celaya, El Ébano, and Trinidad, the largest ever to occur on the North American continent outside of the U.S. Civil War. A war effort of such epic scope, scale, sophistication, and speed of operations demanded the greatest attentions of Grand Strategy, and in its wake left the Constitutionalist Army with the institutional rigor necessary for governing. Part 2 recounts the Death of Villa¿s Army of the North, and with it the last of the great Military-Agricultural Complexes of North America.

Part 1 of the second entry in the Maneuver and Battle in the Mexican Revolution trilogy, covers the mobilization, institutional beginnings, and operations of the Constitutionalist Army from its founding to the end of 1913. Of particular note are General Francisco "Pancho" Villa's campaign to conquer Chihuahua, General Álvaro Obregón's successful Guaymas Valley Campaign, and General Pablo González's Tamaulipas Campaign. As the scope, scale, and sophistication of military operations continue to increase, the Federal Army expands, reorganizes, and popularizes, forfeiting its claim to professional exceptionalism in the process.

The Mexican Revolution started slowly, but after five years major combat operations had spread from the state of Chihuahua to every corner of the nation, drawing in new and varied fighting traditions. The final year of maneuver warfare, 1915, witnessed the largest battles ever to take place on the North American continent, except for the U.S. Civil War.This volume examines the strategies formulated through the Revolution's many twists and turns, and analyzes the tactics employed in order to explain the rise and fall of Francisco I. Madero, and why and how the Constitutionalists emerged victorious against the armies of Francisco "Pancho" Villa and Emiliano Zapata.

"This is an extraordinarily important history of both U.S.-Mexico relations and of the political, economic, social, and cultural activities of Americans in Mexico."—Friedrich Katz, author of The Life and Times of Pancho Villa "Empire and Revolution is empowering as well as informative, providing a detailed record and judicious interpretation of the protean relations between the United States and Mexico. As John Mason Hart convincingly narrates, the association is of dynamic importance for people of both countries. While there have been studies on discrete parts and periods of the U.S.-Mexico relation, this book charts and anchors the relation globally. Hart allows the reader intellectual as well as imaginative insight into the multifaceted social, cultural, and political reality of the sharing of North America—then, now, and in the future."—Juan Gomez-Quinones, author of Mexican-American Labor, 1790-1990
