This book examines the question of the repression of LGBT people through psychiatry during the fascist regime in Italy, a subject that has not been investigated until now. It draws together the substantial archival record of patients, doctors and fascist authorities to reconstruct intricate behind-the-scenes dialogue, and to document one of the ways in which the regime repressed LGBT lives in this period. Italian Fascism's Forgotten LGBT Victims focusses on three different psychiatric hospitals in three parts of the country - Rome, Florence and the small Calabrian town of Girifalco, which had different attitudes and therapeutic approaches. Archive research results are contextualised within the psychiatric theory of the time, highlighting the existing discrepancies between theory and daily routine practice of mental health institutions in Italy during the regime. Using a variety of sources, Gabriella Romano expands current knowledge of the history of Italian psychiatry, and, in doing so, she also touches a number of crucial issues of medical history, history of Fascism and queer history. Most importantly, this original and well-documented study sheds light on the life stories of ordinary LGBT individuals and their families under the fascist regime, a topic that is still mostly unexplored.

A metà degli anni Cinquanta Mario Tobino si trovò a dirigere pro tempore l'Ospedale Psichiatrico di Lucca a Maggiano. Per meglio riflettere su quell'esperienza che gli richiedeva di aggiungere alle competenze del "medico di manicomio" nuove responsabilità burocratico-amministrative, e quindi in ultima analisi sociali, Tobino verga un diario: quaderni fitti di appunti che registrano riflessioni e confessioni, e che qua e là rivelano sconcerto e disillusione. Pagine che lo scrittore deciderà di pubblicare alcuni decenni più tardi, aggiungendovi una straniante coloritura "cinese" per dare il senso della distanza, non solo cronologica, che intercorre tra l'oggi della pubblicazione e il mondo arcaico descritto nel diario. Dagli anni Cinquanta in cui i "matti" venivano tenuti nascosti e lontani dal mondo dei "sani", in cui la psichiatria italiana viveva di improvvisazione, infatti, tutto è cambiato grazie agli psicofarmaci, alla legge Basaglia, alla chiusura dei manicomi. Consapevole che raccontare la sua esperienza sia anche «tratteggiare qualche grano dell'Italia di quei tempi», Tobino affida come testamento ai lettori questo romanzo-diario che rappresenta l'ultimo tassello di quel "racconto di Magliano" che andò tessendo per molti anni, «un intreccio di scrittura e di vita - scrive nell'introduzione Valeria Paola Babini - che ci porta in una sorta di labirinto rigoglioso dove, anziché perderci, ci ritroviamo più umani».

Los locos tienen algo que decir; en realidad, mucho, y merece la pena escucharlo o leerlo, sea en clave psicopatológica o sociocultural. Desde los años centrales del siglo XIX, los médicos fomentaron el uso clínico de la escritura con fines diagnósticos y terapéuticos en pacientes mentales. Se trataba de acercamientos clínicos, pero en ellos se tenía muy en cuenta la experiencia interna, subjetiva y emocional del paciente. Además, la escritura también es una muestra de las propias vivencias del sujeto, de su estado anímico y, sobre todo, de la experiencia de internamiento. Esta obra se centra en la Casa de Dementes de Santa Isabel, en Leganés, y en las cartas de unos internos que muestran sus preocupaciones, angustias y miedos, pero también sus resistencias y sus denuncias.A través de este material epistolar obtenemos una muy valiosa información sobre las características de la institución, sobre su funcionamiento y sobre la vida cotidiana en su interior. Además, las cartas recopiladas, que corresponden a la primera mitad del siglo XX, excepto las de dos pacientes del siglo XIX, nos aportan datos acerca de las experiencias, las emociones y las sensaciones de los pacientes. Se trata de cartas que nunca llegaron a su destino y que se adjuntaron a la historia clínica del paciente.
