La Biblioteca Ambrosiana di Milano, fondata dal cardinale Federico Borromeo, accoglie tra i suoi fondi manoscritti un nucleo consistente di codici miniati, dall’età tardoantica al pieno Rinascimento. Sulla scia delle ricerche di Renata Cipriani, il presente volume offre il catalogo dei manoscritti miniati in Italia nel corso del Trecento (fondo inf.). Tra questi si segnalano il celebre Virgilio Ambrosiano di Petrarca, con il frontespizio di Simone Martini; il Solino, miniato a Bologna nella prima metà del secolo XIV, con raffigurazioni di monstra; il Livio volgarizzato, copiato nel 1373 in area veneta, con un ciclo illustrativo pressoché completo. Questo catalogo nasce dall’incontro di esperienze diverse – da un lato l’analisi codicologica e testuale, dall’altro lo studio dell’apparato iconografico e della sua storia critica – ma complementari, per offrire al lettore uno sguardo quanto più completo su quella «miniera di storie» che è ogni manoscritto medievale.

The reception of Boccaccio’s works began early on, throughout Europe. This is reflected impressively in the splendidly illuminated manuscripts of Filocolo, Filostrato and Teseida, De casibus virorum illustrium, De mulieribus claris, and The Decameron. The stories of The Decameron, an entertaining and profound universe illustrating the all-too-human, were depicted on wedding chests, and in panel paintings and wall frescoes. They were brought into the modern age primarily by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film re-enactment dating from 1971. This volume focuses on Boccaccio’s drawings and the development of his portrait iconography, the illuminated manuscripts and their courtly patrons, and on the impact of The Decameron and its stories, which are so significant in art history and theory.
