El autor es Capitan de la Marina Mercante, Doctor en Marina Civil y profesor la Facultat de Nautica de Barcelona (FNB), donde imparte las asignaturas relacionadas con la estiba y el transporte de todo tipo de mercancias. Este Manual de estiba para mercancias solidas esta pensado y concebido para dar respuesta a los actuales planes de estudio de las facultades de nautica, pero tambien va dirigido a todas las personas que tienen relacion con el transporte maritimo y necesitan conocer los metodos y procedimientos que integran el arte de la estiba. Los profesionales del sector maritimo tienen, en este manual, un texto donde podran consultar los nuevos metodos de estiba y refrescar los tradicionales. El estudio y el desarrollo de los conceptos relacionados con la estiba implican un conocimiento previo de materias que es aconsejable repasar para el buen entendimiento de los temas que se analizan en este manual. Por ejemplo, es necesario conocer los conceptos generales relativos a la estabilidad, la construccion naval, los sistemas de servicios, las instalaciones y la seguridad del buque. Todos los temas enumerados estan intimamente vinculados a la estiba y su conocimiento se considera una premisa imprescindible. Los capitulos se desarrollan de acuerdo a las caracteristicas de las mercancias manipuladas, ya que el objetivo principal de la estiba es conocer los procedimientos y las particularidades de las acciones realizadas en las operaciones de carga y descarga. Al mismo tiempo, se estudiaran y analizaran los efectos del transporte maritimo sobre las mercancias. l planteamiento sobre los objetivos que pretende alcanzar este manual obliga a realizar algunas puntualizaciones para una buena comprension de los mismos, que son aplicables a todo el texto y se tendran en cuenta durante el desarrollo de los capitulos.
