Este manual se baseia em uma herança milenar para aplicar uma estratégia que nos chegou da antiga Ásia. Porque as recomendações dadas por seu autor, Sun Tzu, não perdem sua relevância apesar de ter mais de dois mil e quinhentos anos de idade. Sabe-se que ele inspirou muitas figuras históricas como Napoleão ou Maquiavel, e até mesmo as estratégias dos revolucionários vietnamitas. Mas todas estas aplicações estavam no contexto da guerra. Em contraste, a adaptação que fiz se concentra no gerenciamento de mudanças para os gerentes. Porque este tratado fornece recomendações de sabedoria, de senso comum. Porque em minha própria experiência de estudar engenharia de negócios e até mesmo obter um MBA, eu freqüentemente sentia que não tinha a sabedoria de aplicar mudanças organizacionais. Vou dar um exemplo concreto das adaptações que farei nos próximos capítulos. A arte da guerra diz "A melhor vitória é vencer sem lutar", e minha adaptação ao assunto deste manual é "A melhor mudança organizacional é alcançada sem ações judiciais, sem desvinculação ou um agravamento do clima organizacional". Porque quando falo de sabedoria, estou realmente falando de senso comum. Porque quanto mais leio este manual, mais estou convencido de que nenhuma de suas máximas está ultrapassada. E não digo isto porque acredito que a gestão da mudança dentro de uma empresa parece ser uma guerra. O que realmente acredito é que a gestão de mudanças deve aprender com o manual para acrescentar as pessoas que compõem uma organização em vez de tratá-las como um recurso econômico ou pior, um inimigo a ser derrotado. Pois este manual faz recomendações baseadas na sabedoria milenar sobre o conhecimento da natureza humana, especialmente em tempos de confronto. Como podem ver, o que tentarei fazer neste manual é compreender e fazer recomendações práticas para entender as raízes de um conflito quando uma mudança organizacional é feita
