El presente manual es una adaptación al castellano del manual elaborado por Gloria M. Miele, Deborah Hasin y cols. (2000) de la versión original de la Substance Dependence Severity Scale (en adelante SDSS). Estas autoras desarrollaron el texto teniendo presente los criterios del DSM-IV y la CIE-10. Teniendo en cuenta que desde entonces hasta la publicación de este manual ha surgido la versión del DSM-5, en el presente manual se ha optado por introducir ítems que den respuesta a los criterios incluidos en la citada edición del DSM.
