Excerpt from Manual of Free-Hand Penmanship IN this little Manual we have sought to give in very brief com pass the best method of teaching writing. Other manuals have their excellences; but they are generally so scientific and elaborate, that the practical teacher is discouraged, and soon throws them aside. In presenting this, we presume on the teacher's knowledge of the art of teaching, and only give what is needed for this special branch. We have condensed in it the results of years of practical experience in the public schools; and have endeavored to put it in such a simple, practical, and convenient shape, that the teacher can take it in his left hand, and illustrate with his right on the board. The art of teaching writing is no mystery: it is simply about the hardest work the teacher has to do; and for this simple reason, that the results are visible and permanent. If the teachings of this little book are followed, we will warrant the most satisfactory results. We might apologize for the homely character of the language used in the description of the letters. Some may mock at it; but remember that it is meant for little children between eight and nine years old. If you have hitherto been using a complicated, scientific, abstract system of elements and principles with them, all we can say is, Try this method, and we are satisfied to abide by your verdict. There is an old proverb, Let those laugh that win. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Oxford Handbook Of Walt Whitman written by and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

More than a century after his death, Walt Whitman remains a fresh phenomenon. Startling discoveries and massive transcription efforts are enabling new insights into his life and achievements. In the past few years new breakthroughs have proliferated, including the publication of a long-lost Whitman novel, Jack Engle, along with a hitherto unknown health guide for urban men and previously undiscovered poems. Myriad other documents have become more readily available, including largely unmined troves of journalism, narrative and documentary prose, and experimental note-keeping. Leaves of Grass and Whitman's literary life as a whole are thus ripe for reconsideration. The Oxford Handbook of Walt Whitman embraces this expanded view of Whitman and charts new pathways in Whitman Studies by bringing in new perspectives, methods, and contexts.

The Golden Thread written by Ewan Clayton and has been published by Atlantic Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-05 with History categories.

The Golden Thread is an enthralling and accessible history of the cultural miracle that is the written word. It is an invention that has been used to share ideas in every field of human endeavour, and a motor of cultural, scientific and political progress. From the simple representative shapes used to record transactions of goods and animals in ancient Egypt, to the sophisticated typographical resources available to the twenty-first-century computer user, the story of writing is the story of human civilization itself. Ewan Clayton marks each step in the historical development of writing, and explores the social and cultural impact of every stage: the invention of the alphabet; the replacement of the papyrus scroll with the codex in the late Roman period; the perfecting of printing using moveable type in the fifteenth century and the ensuing spread of literacy; the industrialization of printing during the Industrial Revolution; the impact of artistic Modernism on the written word in the early twentieth century - and of the digital switchover at the century's close. The Golden Thread raises issues of urgent interest for a society living in an era of unprecedented change to the tools and technologies of written communication. Chief amongst these is the fundamental question: 'What does it mean to be literate in the world of the early twenty-first century?' The Golden Thread belongs on the bookshelves of anyone who is inquisitive not just about the centrality of writing in the history of humanity, but also about its future.
