Manual of Library Cataloguing is the tell-all manual to unlock the secrets of catalog collection from libraries as small as a private person's independently owned collection to libraries as large as the British Museum. Excerpt: "Generally I find a library catalog is assumed to be a thing that is somehow 'made' at a single stroke, as Aladdin's palace was built, at intervals of ten or a dozen years, or whenever a 'new catalog' is thought to be needed..."

Excerpt from Library Cataloguing Some years ago I prepared a Manual of Library Cataloguing, which met with more acceptance than was expected, and has been out of print for some time. Upon considering requests for a new edition, I concluded that a book upon somewhat different lines would be more likely to meet the present requirements of librarians and library assistants - this volume is the result. No pretence is made that the work is exhaustive or complete, but it is hoped that it will serve as a practical and useful introduction to the several codes of cataloguing rules. The statements made in it are not meant to be dogmatic, but they indicate the lines upon which good and accurate work is to be accomplished. As the illustrative examples were chosen from every-day books, and are worked out as simply as possible, they should be found useful by beginners; especially in preparing for the examinations of the Library Association in this subject. I am indebted to my friend Mr. Frank Pacy, City Librarian of Westminster, for reading my proofs and suggesting many improvements, although I am sure he would not care to accept responsibility for all the views expressed or the mode of expressing them. Excerpt from Manual of Library Classification and Shelf Arrangement This work has been prepared to meet the requirements of those who are engaged or interested in the study of practical library methods. No English book on this subject has been issued since Edwards dealt with classifications generally in his Memoirs of Libraries, published in 1859; and the literature of the subject consists of little more than papers on single schemes. Classification has never been a strong point in British libraries, and this has arisen partly from apathy on the part of librarians, but also from the difficulty of obtaining information about American and foreign schemes which have been successfully applied to libraries. Leaving out of view Petzholdt's list of classifications contained in his Bibliotheca Bibliographica (1866), I have been unable to find that any single work devoted entirely to a systematic examination of schemes has ever been issued in any country. This little book has been prepared, accordingly, to fill a well-defined space in library literature; and however inadequate or slight the attempt may be, it is earnestly hoped that it will in some measure help to stimulate interest in the subject of classification. Excerpt from San Francisco Cataloguing for Public Libraries: A Manual of the System Used in the San Francisco Free Public Library I. I have tried to make this manual so distinct and detailed that anybody of fair education and intelligence who has never done any cataloguing, can with my treatise in hand catalogue an ordinary town library well enough for practical purposes. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ...as they are not books upon Chester or Canterbury. Therefore the form is Chester, The Cathedral Church of. Hiatt, C. 1897 Canterbury, The Church of St. Martin. Routledge, C. F. 1898 or in shorter fashion: Chester Cathedral. Hiatt, C. 1897 Canterbury, St. Martin's Church. Routledge, C. F. 1898 Upon the same principle a history of a London parish is not entered under "London," but under its particular name with a cross-reference from London to the places, as London. See also the names of parishes, as Chelsea, Kensington, Southwark, Westminster. Monographs upon buildings of national importance in foreign countries are however always entered under the name of the city where situated and not under the name of the building. Works upon St. Mark's, Venice, or Notre Dame de Paris being entered under Venice and Paris respectively, as Venice, St. Mark's. Paris, Notre Dame. To give heed to details of this kind is not "hairsplitting," as the novice may be disposed to imagine--it is the very essence of good cataloguing. Even with most careful attention the cataloguer may well congratulate himself if at the conclusion of his work, and especially when in print, it comes out faultless, because the perfect catalogue absolutely free from error has not yet been seen. CHAPTER IX. SUBJECT, TITLE, AND SERIES ENTRIES (continued). 86.--There remain other varieties of double or treble entries to consider. A book such as Baker, W. R. Intemperance the idolatry of Britain. 3rd ed. pp. 62. sm. 80. n.d. has no appearance of difficulty, as it is so obviously upon intemperance, but the question of concentration of books pro and con upon such a subject as this must be looked int0. It is most undesirable to send an inquirer to a number of headings to...

Excerpt from Manual of Descriptive Annotation for Library Catalogues The part in square brackets is of doubtful utility, or at least badly expressed. According to this, religion is dis cussed from all standpoints save science, and one may be sure science is covered by the word culture. This enumeration is also responsible for some tautology, for what is the difference between discussing religion bistori cally and discussing it from the standpoint of history? The viewpoint of a writer is only of significance when it gives either a narrower or a clearer survey of a subject. Excerpt from Manual for Institution Libraries The library in a state institution is confronted by a threefold problem. It is concerned with getting suitable books, finding and equipping a place to keep them, and carrying on the library so as to make it effective. It is not very difficult to get a collection of books for an institution, but it is often a hard matter to find a suitable room for library purposes. Moreover, it is not enough to have the room and the books, there must be a person to act as librarian. Notwithstanding these obstacles, there are a number of institutions in the United States that have succeeded in getting all three of these requisites and their experience is unanimous on two points. First, they are agreed that there should be a central library from which books could be issued singly or in quantities and to which the inmates could go in person without disturbing the routine of the place. Second, they believe that the library must be recognized as a distinct department and have a suitable officer in charge who will devote at least half his time to its management. The questions which must be answered by an institution librarian may be grouped as follows: 1. What books shall I select? 2. How shall I arrange them? 3. How shall I keep track of them? 4. How shall I get them to the readers? 5. How shall I keep them in good condition? The Manual which is herewith presented aims to provide a guide for librarians in hospitals, prisons, reformatories, schools for the deaf, blind, feeble-minded, and children who are wards of the state.
