Studio critico della lingua latina è un manuale di latino pensato per gli studenti delle Università Pontificie, ma rivolto anche a chiunque, da autodidatta, desideri accostarsi alla conoscenza di questa antica lingua e all'arte della traduzione. Esso raccoglie una provocazione legittima e radicale: ha senso continuare a studiare latino oggi? In particolare, ha ancora senso l'obbligatorietà dello studio del latino nelle Università Pontificie? Frutto di un pluriennale insegnamento presso l'Università Gregoriana di Roma, a simili domande il manuale intende rispondere recisamente di sì, indicando però quale sia l'obiettivo specifico di un simile studio oggi: non quello di imparare a parlare latino; né tanto quello di imparare a tradurre dal latino; piuttosto, acquisendo una prima basilare capacità di comprensione dei testi latini, quello certo di arrivare a saper apprezzare una pagina della Vulgata in originale, come pure dell'ampia letteratura latina giunta fino a noi, con traduzione interlineare in lingua moderna, ma poi anche di imparare bene in ogni lingua a fare l'analisi della parola, della proposizione e del periodo di un testo, scritto o orale, nella convinzione che una simile competenza sia particolarmente importante per crescere nella capacità di ascolto di un libro come pure di una persona. L'apprendimento del latino dunque inteso come occasione per essere introdotti o rafforzati nella dialettica di lettera e spirito, qualità specifica di una cultura cristiana, che si traduce in specifica capacità di ascolto e di profondità. Alla luce di una simile finalità, si comprende il titolo dato al libro: Studio critico della lingua latina. Critico allude senz'altro all'approccio logico che si concretizza nell'assoluta centralità data alle tre analisi, del periodo, logica e grammaticale; ma in senso più profondo allude all'intento di educare a una maggiore capacità di ascolto, all'apprezzamento del diverso, del differente, dell'altrimenti, attraverso l'iniziazione all'arte e al gusto dell'interpretazione dei testi, che poi siamo anzitutto noi stessi. Il metodo proposto è innovativo, a metà strada tra l'insegnamento di una lingua viva e quello di una lingua morta: tramite l'ausilio di una traduzione interlineare, il lettore è chiamato ad accostarsi fin da subito ad alcune pagine di san Tommaso, studiando man mano la grammatica e la sintassi latina, in base ai testi letti, insistendo come già detto sulle tre analisi. Il corso si articola in diciannove Lezioni. Ogni Lezione presenta grosso modo la medesima struttura: all'inizio, in un riquadro, è anticipata la materia che verrà trattata; quindi, dopo aver presentato il contenuto del periodo preso in esame, si procede a una decifrazione del testo latino attraverso un'approfondita analisi, del periodo, logica e grammaticale; contestualmente, via via che se ne offra l'occasione, si presentano i diversi aspetti della grammatica e sintassi latina; si conclude aggiungendo alcuni rilievi etimologici relativi ai vocaboli incontrati: filosoficamente, la pratica etimologica è emblematica infatti di quella forzatura della lettera che, insistendo sulla lettera, permette di andare aldilà della lettera; al termine, in un altro riquadro, vengono proposte domande di verifica di quanto si sarebbe dovuto apprendere, nonché schede di analisi del testo da compilare.
