Following the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s and the dispersal of their libraries, a number of British collectors set to work to recover as much as possible. Of their second generation, Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631) was an outstanding member, also acquiring a wide range of other material. Indeed, so important was his library that it became one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753. Significant records - never previously studied as a whole - survive from the early years of Cotton's library and this book edits and analyses these, throwing important new light on Sir Robert, his son and grandson as collectors, and providing much fresh evidence on the history of their collection and its development.

The library of Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631) is arguably the most important collection of manuscripts ever assembled in Britain by a private individual. Amongst its many treasures are the Lindisfarne Gospels, two of the contemporary copies of Magna Carter and the only surviving manuscript of Beowulf. It was bequeathed to the nation by Sir Robert's granson in 1701. The British Library is currently engaged in laying the groundwork for a new and definitive catalogue of the manuscripts.

The Cotton Manuscripts were assembled by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (1571-1631), antiquarian and bibliophile. They are one of the major manuscript collections in the British Library. Cotton obtained manuscripts from the collections of the antiquarian scholar John Leland (d. 1552), the mathematician and astronomer John Dee (d. 1609), and the statesman William Cecil, Baron Burghley (d. 1598), among others. This archive includes 360 manuscripts from the Cotton Collection. Most were selected by Professor Paul Harvey, University of Durham, and a former member of the British Library Manuscript Department, for the original publication on microfilm in 1987. It includes all manuscripts that are primary sources for English literature and British history from the middle of the twelfth century to the end of the fifteenth century.
