In dem Band werden sämtliche Manuskripte und Drucke veröffentlicht, die Marx und Engels 1845 bis 1847 im Kontext des Projektes der "Deutschen Ideologie" zu veröffentlichen beabsichtigten. Die Edition der insgesamt 17 Manuskripte und zwei Drucke unterscheidet sich signifikant von bisherigen Ausgaben. Erstmals in der Editionsgeschichte wird nicht der Versuch unternommen, die abgebrochene Arbeit an den Manuskripten zu vervollständigen und ein abgeschlossenes "Werk" zu rekonstruieren. Vielmehr werden die Textzeugen in ihrem authentischen Zustand dokumentiert. Das ist insbesondere bedeutsam für die sechs Manuskriptfragmente, aus denen Editoren des 20. Jh. das berühmte Kapitel "I. Feuerbach" kompiliert haben. Zudem wird der wechselnde publizistische Rahmen dokumentiert, in dem die Arbeiten zur "Deutschen Ideologie" erscheinen sollten - so fanden aufgrund des ursprünglich geplanten Projektes einer Vierteljahrsschrift drei Texte von M. Heß und ein Text von R. Daniels Aufnahme in den Band, wie auch das von Engels erst im Frühjahr 1847 abgefasste Manuskript "Die wahren Sozialisten". Der umfangreiche textkritische Apparat bietet in bisher nicht gekannter Weise Einblicke etwa in die Genese der materialistischen Geschichtsauffassung.

Die Manuskripte von Marx und Engels zur Kritik der Deutschen Ideologie sind fragmentarisch geblieben. Die vorliegende Ausgabe präsentiert sie in zentralen Auszügen und chronologisch geordnet. Since the 1920s, scholars have promoted a set of manuscripts, long abandoned by Marx and Engels, to canonical status in book form as The German Ideology, and in particular its 'first chapter,' known as 'I. Feuerbach.' Part one of this revolutionary study relates in detail the political history through which these manuscripts were editorially fabricated into editions and translations, so that they could represent an important exposition of Marx's 'theory of history.' Part two presents a wholly-original view of the so-called 'Feuerbach' manuscripts in a page-by-page English-language rendition of these discontinuous fragments. By including the hitherto devalued corrections that each author made in draft, the new text invites the reader into a unique laboratory for their collaborative work. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt am Main, in 1923, this book aims at shedding light on the archives of some of the key thinkers of Critical Theory of Society, also well known as “Frankfurt School”. To pay homage to this current of thought, this contributed volume aims to make the archives speak for themselves, to show the public the quantity of unpublished material still existing by the authors of the Critical Theory which are now in funds in different parts of the world (in Germany, in Italy, or in the United States), and to show that Critical Theory remains alive 100 years after its inception.
