China is emerging as a new superpower in science and technology, reflected in the success of its spacecraft and high-velocity Maglev trains. While many seek to understand the rise of China as a technologically-based power, the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s may seem an unlikely era to explore for these insights. Despite the widespread verdict of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution as an unmitigated disaster for China, a number of recent scholars have called for re-examining Maoist science--both in China and in the West. At one time Western observers found much to admire in Chairman Mao's mass science, his egalitarian effort to take science out of the ivory tower and place it in the hands of the disenfranchised peasant, the loyal worker, and the patriot soldier. Chunjuan Nancy Wei and Darryl E. Brock have assembled a rich mix of talents and topics related to the fortunes and misfortunes of science, technology, and medicine in modern China, while tracing its roots to China's other great student revolution--the May Fourth Movement. Historians of science, political scientists, mathematicians, and others analyze how Maoist science served modern China in nationalism, socialism, and nation-building--and also where it failed the nation and the Chinese people. If the Cultural Revolution contributed to China's emerging space program and catalyzed modern malaria treatments based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, it also provided the origins of a science talent gap and the milieu from which a one-child policy would arise. Given the fundamental importance of China today, and of East Asia generally, it is imperative to have a better understanding of its most recent scientific history, but especially that history in a period of crisis and how that crisis was resolved. What is at issue here is not only the specific domain of the history of science, but the social and scientific policies of China generally as they developed and were applied prior to, during, and after the Cultural Revolution.

These early philosophical writings underpinned the Chinese revolutions, and their clarion calls to insurrection remain some of the most stirring of all time. Drawing on a dizzying array of references from contemporary culture and politics, Zizek's firecracker commentary reaches unsettling conclusions about the place of Mao's thought in the revolutionary canon.

Academic interest in Mao Zedong's role in the Chinese Revolution remains intense, as scholars and commentators continue to analyze his thinking and the history of the movement for clues about the Chinese model and its supposedly unique features. The debate about Mao's career and influence is now enlivened by the consequences of the dramatic turn by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) away from the radical socialism he is said to represent and its granting of a far greater role to the market, though without shedding much of its political power. Collections of primary sources on Mao Zedong and CCP history, written by the communists themselves, are readily available but informed scholarship is indispensable to explain these sources and to put them in proper perspective. What were Mao's objectives? Were they consistent? In what ways did Mao manipulate the CCP and the state to his own political ends? To what extent did his political vision dominate Chinese politics in the revolutionary years and after 1949? And where is Chinese communism now headed? This new major work will help to identify some of the answers. Bringing together the best scholarship, reportage, and other materials, the collection includes the following: scholarly studies by Westerners on Mao's life and work, including wide-ranging studies of Mao's political career as a whole psychological studies studies on his role in the urban years, the rural period, the Japanese War, the Civil War, the 1950s, the deepening of the revolution under the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, and the final years specialist essays on his views on topics such as philosophy, literature, economics, and the Soviet Union studies on his interpretation of Marxism assessments of his role in the Chinese Revolution by Soviet China watchers. Selected Works of Mao Tse-Tung, Volume IV focuses on the views of Mao Tse-Tung on communism, revolution, civil war, and patriotism. The volume first ponders on China's policy following victory in the war of resistance against Japan and the response of Mao Tse-Tung on Chiang Kai-shek's meddling with the surrender of Japanese forces and his plans for a counter-revolutionary civil war. The publication also takes a look at the role of rent reduction and production on the defense of liberated areas and the policy for work in the liberated areas. The book examines Mao Tse-Tung's call for his comrades to rise in arms against the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek, particularly taking note of the support that Chiang Kai-shek is getting from the United States. The text also elaborates on the concept of operations for the Liaohsi-Shenyang and Huai-hai campaigns; strengthening the party committee system; and the demand to include punishment for Japanese and Kuomintang war criminals.
