Fish Lake is a large, natural lake located in the mountains of south-central Utah that is known for its scenery, sports fishery, and other recreational activities. Unfortunately, Eurasian watermilfoil (myriophyllum Spicatum), a non-native, invasive aquatic plant, was accidentally or illegally introduced into the lake a number of years ago. This plant outcompetes the native vegetation, forming dense patches along the shoreline. It is detrimental to the trout population, restricts fishing from shore, and becomes tangled in the propellers of boats passing through it. The Fishlake National Forest is exploring ways to treat or suppress the milfoil. A map of the milfoil distribution in the lake would aid in determining the best control or eradication measures, developing and planning treatments, and assessing treatment effectiveness. Remote sensing is one technology that could be used to efficiently map the milfoil. At the request of the Fishlake National Forest and with funding from the Forest Service Remote Sensing Steering Committee, the Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC) conducted a study to investigate the feasibility of using high-resolution satellite imagery to map the current extent of milfoil in Fish Lake. High-resolution WorldView-2 satellite imagery was acquired in fall 2010. The imagery was segmented at different scales and a random forests classifier was used to map the milfoil and other dominant vegetation in the lake using field-collected reference data. The dense milfoil was mapped with cross-validated user's and producer's accuracies ranging between 75 and 94 percent.

"Invasive nonnative plants threaten native species with habitat loss, displacement, and severe population declines, thus seriously reducing biodiversity. Invasive Plants of California's Wildlands is a tremendous source for land managers and others who are interested in protecting the rich natural heritage of California and surrounding states."--John C. Sawhill, President and CEO, The Nature Conservancy

Biology Ecology And Management Of Aquatic Plants written by Joseph Caffrey and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-17 with Science categories.

There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquatic plants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainage channels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a sound knowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution and the different forms of control available including chemical and physical, and biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20 different countries was generated from the tenth in the highly successful series of European Weed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this being the tenth. It provides a valuable insight into the complexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discusses state-of-the-art control techniques and deals with patterns of regrowth and recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to the use of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recent years. Underpinning the development of such control techniques is a growing body of knowledge relating to the biology and ecology of water plants. The authorship of the papers represents the collective wisdom of leading scientists and experts from fisheries agencies, river authorities, nature conservation agencies, the agrochemical industry and both governmental and non-governmental organisations.

A Handbook Of Global Freshwater Invasive Species written by Robert A. Francis and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-12 with Science categories.

Invasive non-native species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.

This open access book describes the serious threat of invasive species to native ecosystems. Invasive species have caused and will continue to cause enormous ecological and economic damage with ever increasing world trade. This multi-disciplinary book, written by over 100 national experts, presents the latest research on a wide range of natural science and social science fields that explore the ecology, impacts, and practical tools for management of invasive species. It covers species of all taxonomic groups from insects and pathogens, to plants, vertebrates, and aquatic organisms that impact a diversity of habitats in forests, rangelands and grasslands of the United States. It is well-illustrated, provides summaries of the most important invasive species and issues impacting all regions of the country, and includes a comprehensive primary reference list for each topic. This scientific synthesis provides the cultural, economic, scientific and social context for addressing environmental challenges posed by invasive species and will be a valuable resource for scholars, policy makers, natural resource managers and practitioners.

In addition to its splendor, Bear Lake is a scientific wonder. Over the past few decades, Bear Lake has been intensely studied because it is one of the oldest lakes in North America, has not dried up during extended warm and dry climates, and is in an area sensitive to changes in regional climate pattterns. Therefore, Bear Lake research helps us to understand past climates and environments of this area. For the first time, a non-technical publication - this brochure - has been published to help the general public understand the wonders of Bear Lake.
