For God And Liberty written by PAMELA. VOEKEL and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-29 with categories.

The Age of Revolution has traditionally been understood as an era of secularization, giving the transition from monarchy to independent republics through democratic movements a genealogy that assumes hostility to Catholicism. By centering the story on Spanish and Latin American actors, Pamela Voekel argues that at the heart of this nineteenth-century transformation in Spanish America was a transatlantic Catholic civil war. Voekel demonstrates Reform Catholicism's significance to the thought and action of the rebel literati who led decolonization efforts in Mexico and Central America, showing how each side of this religious divide operated from within a self-conscious intercontinental network of like-minded Catholics. For its central protagonists, the era's crisis of sovereignty provided a political stage for a religious struggle. Drawing on ecclesiastical archives, pamphlets, sermons, and tracts, For God and Liberty reveals how the violent struggles of decolonization and the period before and after Independence are more legible in light of the fault lines within the Church.

Divided By Faith And Ethnicity written by Andrea Althoff and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-22 with Religion categories.

Two unprecedented, striking developments form part of the reality of many Latin Americans. Recent decades have seen the dramatic rise of a new religious pluralism, namely the spread of Pentecostal Christianity - Catholic and Protestant alike - and the growth of indigenous revitalization movements. This study analyzes these major transitions, asking what roles ethnicity and ethnic identities play in the contemporary process of religious pluralism, such as the growth of the Protestant Pentecostal and neo-Pentecostal movements, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, and the indigenous Maya movement in Guatemala. This book aims to provide an understanding of the agenda of religious movements, their motivations, and their impact on society. Such a pursuit is urgently needed in Guatemala, a postwar country experiencing acrimonious religious competition and a highly contentious debate on religious pluralism. This volume is relevant to scholars and students of Latin American Studies, Sociology of Religion, Anthropology, Practical Theology, and Political Sciences.

The Archaeology Of Complex Societies In Southeastern Pacific Coastal Guatemala written by Francisco Estrada Belli and has been published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with History categories.

This volume presents the results of research conducted from 1995 to 1997 in an area of Guatemala previously overlooked by archaeologists and whose obscure prehistory had been the topic of many speculative culture-historical syntheses. The significance of its results lies in the finding of several important pre-Hispanic settlements and a web of trade interactions linking their populations with neighboring areas of the Maya region. The primary objective is to provide a chronological framework for cultural processes that go from the development of sedentary life to the emergence and decline of complex social organization. The work also discusses the internal composition and dynamics of hierarchical social organization as reflected in settlement patterns and artifact distributions. The archaeological findings include survey and excavation data from early villages and hierarchically organized polities centered at densely populated settlements, as well as the locating and documenting of several 'lost' historical places of the Spanish Conquest.
