Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind: A Bestseller's Odyssey from Atlanta to Hollywood presents the first comprehensive overview of how this iconic novel became an international phenomenon that has managed to sustain the public's interest for seventy-five years. Various Mitchell biographies and several compilations of her letters tell part of the story, but, until now, no single source has revealed the full saga. This entertaining account of a literary and pop culture phenomenon tells how Mitchell's book was developed, marketed, distributed, and otherwise groomed for success in the 1930s—and the savvy measures taken since then by the author, her publisher, and her estate to ensure its longevity.

“A lively tale of historical innovation, the thrill of the bibliophile’s hunt, greed and betrayal.” – The New York Times Book Review "An addictive and engaging look at the ‘competitive, catty and slightly angst-ridden’ heart of the world of book collecting.” - The Houston Chronicle The never-before-told story of one extremely rare copy of the Gutenberg Bible, and its impact on the lives of the fanatical few who were lucky enough to own it. For rare-book collectors, an original copy of the Gutenberg Bible--of which there are fewer than 50 in existence--represents the ultimate prize. Here, Margaret Leslie Davis recounts five centuries in the life of one copy, from its creation by Johannes Gutenberg, through the hands of monks, an earl, the Worcestershire sauce king, and a nuclear physicist to its ultimate resting place, in a steel vault in Tokyo. Estelle Doheny, the first woman collector to add the book to her library and its last private owner, tipped the Bible onto a trajectory that forever changed our understanding of the first mechanically printed book. The Lost Gutenberg draws readers into this incredible saga, immersing them in the lust for beauty, prestige, and knowledge that this rarest of books sparked in its owners. Exploring books as objects of obsession across centuries, this is a must-read for history buffs, book collectors, seekers of hidden treasures, and anyone who has ever craved a remarkable book--and its untold stories.

MISSING THE MARK A young and naïve northeast Georgia mountain girl, Margaret Ann, has great aspirations for her life, but does not have the financial or experiential resources to fulfill her life's plans. But through creativity borne of ambition, circumstances that lead her toward her ultimate goal place her on a dangerous and circuitous path.A visit to a nefarious gypsy at a county fair provides dire warning about the future to the girl, who largely ignores the message. Subtle clues abound throughout the book, and a tale that is rife with an omnipresent feeling of uneasiness prevails. Upon arrival at college, Margaret Ann is almost immediately thrust into a world that is different from anything she has previously experienced. Her childlike trust causes her to ignore warning signals as she engages in a relationship that will prove to insert her into the midst of grave danger and uncertainty. The man she marries against her better judgment has a past checkered past and any doubts Margaret Ann has is squelched through ill-advised denial. During the first few days of marriage to Jerry, Margaret Ann begins to wonder about his unwillingness to discuss anything of his past. In fact, he grows defensive over seemingly innocuous questions asked of him. Over the first few years and after the birth of two children, Margaret Ann feels she knows her husband less as the years pass. A surprise discovery by Margaret Ann when the couple takes a walk through the mountains near their home fuels further speculation by Margaret Ann as to the meaning of a mysterious clue she has observed. With her creative mind, Margaret Ann is surprised and pleased when she finds that she has a miraculous ability to engage in the pursuit of sleuthing activities to an extensive degree.Nighttime visits by strange men and out-of-town trips accompanied by no explanation by Jerry further feeds the flames of suspicion. Margaret Ann has now grown into a more confident, strong, and increasingly world-wise young woman who is the mother of two children. She is sometimes lulled into false feelings of security for brief periods of time, but events eventually unfold that bring her back to a belief that potentially dangerous issues are still present. But the only way to find out is to do so secretively and by the machinations by her own fertile mind, which she does with amazing alacrity. But periodically she often doubts that anything other than the ordinary is occurring, occasionally even doubting her sanity.Taking care of her children, and interspersed by events that lead her back to her detective work, Margaret Ann manages to be a mother, wife, and even to begin a career in the Army Reserves. She is protective of Jerry and tries to take care of him emotionally, but it is all in vain. He continues to drift from job to job, one of which he loses due to a crime he was convicted of years before. Then Jerry's sudden demise, despite heroic measures by Margaret Ann, leads to great life changes for her, but the sense of danger still permeates her mind and her life in a number of ways. She sometimes remembers that Jerry had alluded to the fact that he had once been wealthy, but was there any truth to his assertions?.But unexpected events begin to occur with great regularity, and many answers are uncovered by Margaret as the story unfolds. A surprise ending answers all of her questions in a way she could have never imagined. Each of the seemingly mundane aspects of her life from her childhood to later adulthood provides enticing clues as to what will occur from day to day as the story unravels.Dr. John W. Ridley, Ph.D.

In the first part of A Carer's Odyssey, Anna Chan describes how she and her husband Jeff were devastated 16 years ago by the diagnosis of their daughter Emma's severe neurological disorder, called Rett Syndrome. They tried everything with little success, including a course of cranial acupuncture in China. The lack of understanding and empathy of disabled people in China is saddening, while the way in which extended families give their support is inspirational. Part two of the book tells the story of how Jeff became mentally ill and how Anna had to cope with an extra burden. It details her battle to get Jeff's illness recognised and treated, and her struggle to understand Jeff and help him recover. Part three develops the positive lessons learnt from both Anna's professional work as a Carers' Support Worker and Carer Lead for an NHS trust, and from some heart-warming and inspirational accounts of great achievers who have suffered or do suffer from physical or psychological disabilities.

All that has happened in the past, all of Earth's history, man has created in his dream. and the end of time will come when man wakes up and realizes he has been dreaming. Suddenly, a young family wrests themselves from life in a North American city to seek a rustic existence close to nature and a circle of new friends in mountain valleys of British Columbia. But that is only one of the levels to this story. For David and Kelly (Siofra) are a mystic and a psychic on an out-of-the-ordinary quest inspired by higher energy presences, Moita and Amar. How will their experiment in communication between worlds illuminate the process of planetary rebirth that will accelerate years later . . . in the "awakening" of 2012 and beyond? "This time period is at crossroads. Paths before you lead into the future—some not pleasant, some extremely promising. We are here to help you choose the road that leads not to destruction but that leads to life, and to this change of man and his awareness, to the reuniting of [our] worlds." Among facets of this visionary yet down-to-earth adventure: helping persons in crisis to unlock their hearts, find their new balance, deepening our sense of community as a core group risks old selves in order to truly meet, confronting dark energies across lifetimes, undoing man's obsession with power, seeing that the planet's upheavals now mirror our own—as a vast evolution in consciousness comes full circle, aided by higher-dimensional beings, and the Earth Mother voicing her plea for man to awaken as a willing partner. "We are entering a New Age of humanity. Instead of man creating only on his own, set apart from the rest of the universe, this time he is involved in a co-creation—and we are the co-creators. Those who are here have arrived to help found a new world."

Travel And Home In Homer S Odyssey And Contemporary Literature written by Carol Dougherty and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-20 with Literary Criticism categories.

Travel and Home in Homer's Odyssey and Contemporary Literature brings Homer's Odyssey together with contemporary literary texts ranging from Rebecca West's The Return of the Soldier to Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping and Cormac McCarthy's The Road to produce new readings that reframe, reorient, and ultimately revise aspects of Homer's iconic story of travel and home. While some novels share with the Odyssey a celebration of the creative process of improvisation to rethink the relationship between home and travel, others draw upon nostalgia - our complicated longing for home - to unsettle the inevitability of return. Rather than offering an explicit retelling of Homer's poem, each of these novels prompts us to revisit the relationship between travel and home that Odysseus and Penelope embody to ask new questions of that well-read text. Does travel reinforce or destabilize our notion of home? Are mobility and domesticity irrevocably gendered, or can we imagine a world in which Penelope travels and Odysseus stays home? Just as Odysseus continually reinvents his own identity with each new encounter, both abroad and at home, so too we, as readers, participate in an improvisatory interpretive experiment of our own. This volume sets out a new model for reading ancient and contemporary texts together - one that challenges the conventional chronological assumptions inherent in many works of classical reception. No longer a stable text to which we as readers return time and again to find it the same, the Odyssey, together with the novels with which it engages, changes and adapts with each new literary encounter.

The final adventure in the beloved and bestselling Margaret of Ashbury trilogy, which began with A Vision of Light and In Pursuit of the Green Lion. Margaret of Ashbury is ready to settle down; the medieval healer is looking forward to an uneventful life in the country. And, indeed, life with her true love and a brood of rambunctious children is nearly perfect—except for her husband Gregory’s ever-meddling family. Finding himself deep in debt once again, Gregory’s father has plotted to sell Margaret’s daughter off in marriage to save his woodlands from a greedy abbot. In a panic, Margaret turns to her old friend Brother Malachi to help save her daughter by whatever means necessary. The tension within the feuding family rouses an ancient being that dwells in a spring at the center of the disputed woodland. The watery creature has its own plans, and its eye is on Margaret’s infant son. Favorite characters return, the stakes are high, and the air is thick with intrigue and danger. Written with the historical accuracy, supernatural plot twists, and humor that Riley’s readers have grown to love, The Water Devil is a high-spirited adventure that brings Margaret’s odyssey to a satisfying conclusion.
