The present conference volume is an attempt to extend the scope of Eastern European linguistics by bringing together contributions from the fields of sociolinguistics and social anthropology hitherto neglected in the study of Eastern European languages. The collection of papers focusses primarily on cultural and linguistic hybridity in contexts of marginalization. Special attention is given to the language-identity nexus. All analyses are based on field research covering the spectrum from largescale questionnaire elicitation to participant observation. This reflects the editors' concern and hope for a renewed appreciation of field work by Slavic scholars. The volume is structured thematically, dealing withas diverse topics as cultural hybridity, linguistic identity in borderland communities, language death and genesis, code-mixing, as well as dialect shift under conditions of sociopolitical upheaval. Among the languages treated are Kashubian, Banat Bul-garian, Aegean Macedonian, Slovene, non-standard and contact varieties of Russian (Karelian-Russian, Old settlers' Russian, Russian lexifier pidgins and Russian foreigner talk), mixed lects (Surzhyk and Trasianka), and standard-dialect-continua in Ex-Yugoslavia.

In order to communicate, we need a common system of signs that can be understood by every member of the group, in everyday speech referred to as “language”. Although it is certainly true to say that language forms, reproduces and promotes identity, it must not be forgotten that identities are plural, intersect, interact and enter into conflict with each other, and language identity is no exception to this. Consequently, the relationship between language and identity, when taking a closer look at it, involves many different considerations and is not as clear-cut as one might anticipate.

This book offers a close look at the discourse of and around three socially marginalised and vulnerable groups – Irish Travellers, Squatters and Homeless people – in order to understand more about how individuals within them position themselves vis-à-vis mainstream society. It investigates the groups' diverse and provisional relationship with space that challenges mainstream society's spatial logic. Given that the relationship between mobility, space and identity has been explored in migrant contexts, Roberta Piazza proposes a reconsideration of this relationship beyond people's movement from one place to another. Investigating the space-identity nexus among the three groups, she highlights how mobility is not solely a cross-country phenomenon, but a no-less crucial and dramatic reality within an individual nation. Based on close linguistic analysis of interviews collected over many years, Piazza investigates how the participants construct their social and personal identities when talking about themselves and the sites they inhabit, drawing on the concepts of 'heterotopia' and non-sexual desire.

This volume shows the relevance of the concepts of ‘place’ and ‘belonging’ for understanding the dynamics of identification through language. Rural, as well as urbanized areas that are seen as marginal or peripheral to places that are overtly recognized as mixed and hybridized have received relatively little sociolinguistic attention. Language not only expresses identities but also constructs them. Starting from that point, Language and Identity examines the interrelationships between language and identities. It finds that they are so closely interwoven, that words themselves are inscribed with ideological meanings. Words and language constitute meanings within discourses and discourses vary in power. The powerful ones reproduce more powerful meanings, colonize other discourses and marginalize or silence the least powerful languages and cultures. Language and culture death occur in extreme cases of marginalization. This book also demonstrates the socio-economic opportunities offered by language choice and the cultural allegiances of language, where groups have been able to create new lives for themselves by embracing new languages in new countries. Language can be a 'double-edged sword' of opportunity and marginalization. Language and Identity argues that bilingualism and in some cases multilingualism can both promote socio-economic opportunity and combat culture death and marginalization.
